So my truck started misfiring on my way to the store the other day. Check engine and trac light flashing and engine shake. Pulled out to the nearest parking lot and turned it off. Started up fine when I started it again 5 min later.. I had about a 1/4 of tank of gas.
I'm family with engine misfire symptoms because I had a fuel injector go bad and had it replaced. I should've done all of them. I've been filling up with Chevron gas and going to use a fuel injector cleaner for now. It's been running fine for 200 miles since it happened.. no check engine sign. Does this mean that one of the injectors was clogged cuz it was low on gas?

A 1/4 wouldn’t cause a miss fire. Are you loosing coolant? Possible head gasket. When did you do the tune up last? I use top tier gas every time and redline SL1 every oil change. I e only got 128K though.

    What cylinder is misfiring?

    What was the code?

I also vote to check for codes. Symptoms also point to a bad coil(s).

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
Also, make sure that the sending unit is working as it should. Something similar happened to me, seemed like I still had a little under 1/4 of a tank and then the truck sputter and died. Replaced the sending unit only I was like wtf, shook the truck and no sound was heard from the tank. Luckily I was one block from home. Ran over, grab some gas, dumped it in and fired right up. Ordered a Toyota sending unit, dropped the tank, replaced the sending unit and re installed. No issues so far.

I thought it was head gasket before I replaced one fuel injector a year ago. Did leak test twice and it was fine. Last year's symptom's were engine misfire on cold starts but would be fine after warming up 5 min.... Until the engine misfire was permanent and it ended up being a bad fuel injector... This time around it happened while warm but only once and it's been 300 miles since. I did use redline fuel system cleaner and only been using top tier gas for the last week. I figure @ 300,000 miles might have to replace fuel injectors.. although it could be coils but just leaning towards injectors cuz that's what it was last time.. no check engine so I can't pull up codes.

If the problem is intermittent, the CEL can go off. Checking for codes may reveal a stored code from when the problem occurred. You can check live data at the same time like fuel trim values that may ID a problem area.

    Yes, exactly.

If you can afford $50, Amazon has different code readers that are Bluetooth.

AutoZone and other places will check your codes for Free

These engines are fairly modern and made to tell you what might be wrong with them

Thanks for the suggestions. So yesterday morning leaving my driveway, my truck started shaking and got the check engine light flashing with the Trac light. Was code p0306 misfire in 6th cylinder. Turned it on and off several times but it wouldn't go away. Drove it slowly to the mechanic that I trust and it was a bad fuel injector #6. Got the truck back and it's been fine.

Similar situation, 330k, and experiencing the same issue. Hoping for the same outcome.
Although I had a belt come off 2-1/2 years ago and motor got just hot enough before I was able to shut it off to lose about 12 ounces of coolant. Been worried about heads/gasket ever since. I had driven (from cold startup) only 7 miles (11 minutes), but the gauge was pegged on H. I suspect it goes all the way up fast.
I have kept an eye the coolant level regularly, and it seems fine. I got a P0306 last winter, every 400 or so miles. Changed plugs, still got the code. Changed #6 coil and added a bottle of Redline Complete Fuel System Cleaner, code went away. Until last month, it started popping up again, every 400 or so miles.
Going to try more FI cleaner. Apparently the coil was ok (saved it for a spare).

    minor tweaks
if two have gone bad the others aren't far behind. You do know the injectors can be serviced (cleaned professionally) and tested.
