Oh the guy had all kinds of inertia, pinion angle, road turbulence, and other engineering terms. Then one comment was try a couple tanks of hi-test…..

my 2023 6mt does exact same thing. has done since brand new. and continues to do it after getting a tune. also not lifted so drivetrain angles are all stock. i sometimes just stare at the gauge waiting for cel to pop with a misfire code but it never comes. its erratic and not speed dependent so i highly doubt it has anything to do with driveshaft or differential

Mine runs a little crappy in that range too. Knocks a lot at 1700-1800 especially on tip-out. Switching to higher octane helps a great deal with knock. Of course that’s an expensive fix.

My ‘22 TRD-OR 6MT did something VERY similar, but it sounded and felt more like “spark rattle”/pre-ignition to me. This started at ~7500 miles. Dumped a bottle of Lucas Fuel Injector cleaner in it, and filled the tank with 93 octane BP…and the problem stopped. Truck now has about 8900 miles on it and runs great.

I don’t have any kinda valve knock or ping. They had a portable scope hooked up on test drive with “the genius”.

No money, all went to truck...
Only thing close to what you're describing is the engine is easy to lug. It doesn't like low rev shifting especially in 2nd gear. I get some good bucking in 2nd gear if I'm sloppy with shifting. But sounds like you have something different going on?

That was one thing I noticed right away. In other vehicles I could idle around a parking lot in 2nd gear… in the taco it was not happy about it

I have a 23 MT with the same issue.
I didn’t feel it tonight towing our boat but it was definitely there this morning.
Mine has approximately 5000 miles on it now and has done it since new so I don’t think the injector cleaner will do anything for mine. I’ll have to try some premium to see if that fixes the problem on mine also.
Did you try going back to “regular” gas to see if it’s different now?

I too was figuring I’d get a CEL light so I could see what code popped up to give to the service manager but nothing so far.
I’m going to see what the timing and fuel trims are doing when it’s doing this when I get home in a week.
Does anyone know if the intake runners can be watched on a scan tool?
I have never dealt with that system so I’m completely at a loss if that might be the problem?

Just to be clear, my 2022 6mt does not stutter or miss, even when the engine is being bogged under load well under 2000 RPMs. I said that to say this, there is definitely a fault with your Tacoma and you should lean on your local dealership, or maybe a semi-local one, to get it corrected.

Just to pick a nit, "spark rattle" (aka. knocking or detonation) and "pre-ignition" are two very different things; the former is relatively common and typically benign, the latter will literally destroy your engine in a few rotations.

Ooo, I have a lot to learn on this platform. I'm used to cruising at 1800-2000 rpm in my diesel sedan. Very broad torque . Shopping for used 21 and 22 6 MT and you guys are making me nervous with this thread. Driving on out of state trip and going within 48 miles of this dealer so stopping off to see it. 2021 Off road 6 MT, 15,xxx miles and they want $43,000.

i should add that the truck has only ran 91oct since day one and now has 7000km on it.

there is no noise while this happens like engine knock. but you can feel it and see the shifter wobble whilr it happens. ive come across many other posts of people having the same problem so i just brushed it off as just a symptom of this terrible engine.

Try different gas stations, octane and, water remover. I occasionally experience this and from my road trip across the northern states back into Canada my observation is it's more than likely the gas. For example ethanol cut gas from an out of the way remote gas station in vermont made it worse where as fresh ethanol free gas from a station I watched get filled an hour prior in North Dakota was the sharpest I've felt the truck run in a long time. I'm tuned and sell tunes and think everyone should get tuned however a tune wouldn't correct for this. These engines are just very sensitive to fuel quality unfortunately

I don't lug it but often shift below 2k RPM with no issues. If more throttle is utilized at lower RPM it doesn't like it. My zero turn has more low end power.

I ran from Wisconsin through Canada to Vermont then back in June and I still had the issue then .
I have bought gas from several different stations here in N.Wis and haven’t noticed a change but I’m sure they all are getting their fuel from the same refinery in Superior Wi..
I have not tried a tank of premium fuel ( only way to get no ethanol fuel around here) I will now that you said it it solved the issue with yours.
If in fact ,the ethanol fuel is the issue (which it might very well be ) this is a issue that Toyota ,perhaps with enough pressure , might address as we all know ethanol fuel isn’t going away due to amount of money involved .
Congressional people love Ethanol lobbyists $$$$$.

Has anyone opened a case directly with Toyota “ national” to get their attention on this?
