With the stick, just make sure you're shielding the work area from the breeze as best you can, and really spend time prepping the workpieces. I don't know if the 4x sliders come welded and you just weld on to the truck or what, but always best to clamp them on and ensure fit and height before tacking and final welding. This would be especially true if you have to completely weld the kit yourself.

Not necessary for stick welding; in fact it's best used when conditions aren't the best and can burn through paint and rust.

Guarantee the OP's shop used MIG; can easily tell by the bead profile

I've always had a better time with stick with clean parts :notsure:.. That being said I have WAYYYYYYY more time under my belt with Mig and Tig (making stainless railing for days....), so I'd always reach for those over stick.

Agree that OP's guy was Mig...

Any clean metal will always weld better than dirty metal; my point was that stick welding isn't susceptible to making bad welds like MIG or TIG since you mentioned the whole breeze thing.

Dual shield would be great here too.

I wouldn't even bother cleaning off any mill scale from the parts (it comes as a weld it yourself kit) but would definitely prepare the frame by hitting it with a flap disc.

In the strippens the foremen hated wasting time with prep work.

6010 and 6011 where the choice you might be shocked at the things we welded.\

Suit case feeders were just starting to be seen in the field the early ones never had contractors so the gun was hot all the time.

If 4x had instructions on how to fit them, it wouldn’t be a problem. Give me some time and I’ll make a step by step.

A weld it yourself kit assumes you have some knowledge of welding and fitment

I had forgotten about that; they do. It's paired with the square plates and gussets.

Does a weld it kit save you that much money over just buying a complete set of sliders.

Do the weld it kits save big dollars on shipping ?

But if you can not even weld. Till you pay to have the kit built and installed?

Kinda like one person I worked for Who Had his Cousin remove tires from inventory.

They would be bought under the table. I took them to my tire dealer to have them mounted and balanced till things were finished it would have been cheaper to just have bought from my dealer..

Having to eat the cost of 2 bad tires was so very funny.

A weld it yourself kit absolutely saves you money if and only if you weld it yourself or have someone offer to weld them for free (or next to nothing)

Used sliders would be the next most economical choice as new (complete) sliders are about double the 4X kit

Not to mention, many of the 1st Gen offerings are all weld-on frame options

Thank you sir for that answer:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::oldglory:

That was the idea I had.

To me people with 4x4`s that can`t weld really handicap them selves granted some places might make it impossible but having the skill is always good.:oldglory:

Customers probably not bringing them in cause 1. They probably inventoried their parts before heading to you (and tossed the instructions) and 2. They know you guys know what you're doing ;)

I tend to forget the simple things.

Never even think of things like that.

Besides using instructions I hear takes away from your man card.

I never understood that concept so I returned my man card.

I don't see how you can make that assumption about the slider being upside down. You can see by this picture of 4x sliders that the welder could've placed the small triangle gusset underneath the tube stand-off instead of above.. that doesn't make the "slider upside down".

    upload_2023-8-30_16-54-6.png

OP, In your position I would have the current welds re-inforced IF the sliders appear the correct height underneath the truck cab (near the pinch weld) then move forward.

It does show the welder has not been in the trade long enough to under stand the concept of how the gussets work.

Maybe self taught and never learned that aspect.

OP, I would be hesitant to ask this individual to completely remove and start over.

Definitely don't say "cut"! IF someone were going to remove these sliders from your truck the proper term would be grind. Cut makes me think someone's going to whip out their 40 amp plasma and light saber right through a healthy first gen. :laser:
