Yes and no. The factory 4 banger doesn’t come with a brake controller so the simple minded dealer is just saying it can’t be done. That said, that could mean there’s something within the ECU that won’t allow you to connect the wiring harness or they just won’t do it since it’s not a factory option. You may have to look at an aftermarket option. Are you looking for a 4 pin or 7 pin connection? There are some really simple plug and play 4 pin harnesses available.

@PennSilverTaco has a 4 banger single cab like mine and has a trailer hitch/wiring. How'd you do it?

I literally have the exact same truck as @ABA180!

I bought a complete towbar and hitch receiver with the wiring from eTrailer.com if I remember correctly. Actually, my mechanic ordered it and had it shipped to his garage, then I paid him for both the parts and the labor. He went into the left taillight/brakelight, and I too have a 4-pin connector. I also hace a 2" lift/add-a-leaf kit that probably added to my truck's factory 3,500-pound towing capacity. The only serious towing I have ever done with my truck in the nearly three years I've had a trailer hitch is pulling a 16' Ringo single-axle trailer to help my girlfriend and her roommate get their stuff out of a storage unit in the Poconos when they moved back down here to Southeast Pennsylvania. My truck averaged 17 MPG pulling the trailer, which shocked me, and pulled it effortlessly on the highway. There was one really steep hill somewhere in the Lehigh Valley/Pocono Mountains area where my truck would not go above 30 MPH pulling the trailer. My truck had like 167K miles on it at the time I helped them move; I borrowed the Ringo trailer from my work. The trailer weighed 995 pounds unladen. The combination of the trailer, the stuff I had on the trailer, and the stuff I had in the bed probably added up to like 1,500 pounds so I was well under the maximum GCWR. Like I said, I just set the cruise control on the highway (yes, I put in cruise control; I also have intermittent wipers now) and it was effortless!

I just bought a Curt plug and play to add a 4 pin connection. It T’d into the tail light wiring, very simple install, no splicing. That was what I used on my 2007 SR5, worked great while I owned it.

After loading up the remainder of the stuff from the storage unit, at which point we realized the Ringo was more trailer than we actually needed...

A - props for knowing how to load a trailer. B - Your trailer can hold a lot of weight without it being tongue weight (payload capacity) in the bed of the truck for future hauls. I'd have that bad larry loaded up and the bed empty

This was the very first time I'd ever towed a trailer too! My dad extensively went over with me about how to properly load it before I left...

My HVAC control module shorted out, and my local stealership wanted over $1,000 for a new one; I bought one from a totaled truck for $149... :luvya:

Toyota sells a 4 pin trailer light install kit that isn’t like the T connector ones you get on Amazon, but a more permanent install with fuses and relays and such. At least they did for 2nd gens, I’ll see if I can find it. I have the part number saved on my computer.

Edit: Toyota PT725-35120 is the part for 2nd gens. Not sure if there is a comparable 3rd gen part, but they at least used to make them.

That's like 6 grand more than I paid for a full cab brand new. That's bananas. Mine's bare bones, but I can already see that one at least doesn't have the LED headlights at least.

I'd just get a maverick at that point :)
