With insane prices and somewhat difficulty finding a lot of OEM parts has anyone stripped and parted out a brand new Tacoma, or any other vehicle for that matter, and sold the parts? Seem like it would be highly profitable.

A newer Tacoma is likely to be insured with full coverage.

If a newer Tacoma were in a situation where part out was required, that would normally be done at a wrecker. People have auto-text alerts of said vehicle having come in so certain vehicles aren't expected to last long.

What I'm saying is, the owner (or previous owner) wouldn't have possession of that truck because most times they took the agreed settled amount when it was totaled.

Those that have bought back their truck, did so with the intent to turn it into a crawler or the sort.

    As for older variants, sure.

Plenty of people do that already, and have been doing that for years.

There are some people that don't even look for specific vehicles but more like specific parts because certain parts are worth a ton more than others, so often times they'll have alerts for a number of cars with specific parts they look for in each of those.

Buy said part, then make a quick buck off of it on Ebay or FB marketplace.

I'm not talking about flipping parts or parting out a totaled vehicle. I mean purchasing a brand new vehicle and parting it out and selling the brand new parts. Insurance would have nothing to do with it and neither would a wrecking yard

I'd think people that have disposable income to take a shot at doing this have found better (read easier) ways to invest said cash.

For sake of argument if you could double your money in a year selling off your brand new truck parts, which is extremely conservative in my opinion, probably more like quadruple, what other investments are going to do that. Besides not really an investment perse but more an experiment with what seems to me like very little risk

No argument here, just an opposing view that's all.

I guess I'm just looking at it as "something else to do with my money" versus buying a new truck for the sake of part out.

    Me, I wouldn't try it.

    You're welcome to though.

And yeah, plenty of parts would fetch a pretty penny (individually). I'd just hate to go through all of that to part out and deal with many separate buyers. Guess I'm just considering the time spent parting it out, listing, and shipping things as free labor if you want it consider it as coming out ahead.

Sounds like someone is nonchalantly asking about "boosting" cars and parting them out.

Negative. Boosting cars is for thieves. I despise thieves. It was a legit question

If you have the extra cash to buy a new vehicle out right .

A very strong local market established that already deals with you .

Have the science and skills to safely remove parts without damage not the cut and burn style .

Factor all your overhead and labor and insurance. All your personal expenses for a Year will this not be a full time job. See what amount you need to break even.

Parting out vehicles just was not practical in my case little tiny parts that would ship US Mail were fine. Any parts that needed shipped Common Carrier the freight was a deal breaker.

If this was such a money maker why is this not more common!!

I side with @Kwikvette on this.

Your Money your idea see what happens.

Didn't say I was going to do this, thinking about doing this or had the time or energy to do this. Honestly I was at the parts department at my local Toyota dealership, where I've purchased several vehicles, and overheard the employee give the guy that he was helping his total of 2,700 and some change and all he walked out with was a small arm load of parts. Didnt see what it was but it got waant much and it got me curious.

Maybe I should have posed the question a little differently? Like how much would it cost to build a new Tacoma part by part. I guess I should have told the parts guy I needed a price for every part on a 2023 Tacoma. I'll wait in the lobby with a mocha and a something from your free snack bar while I wait

How do I get text alerts about a vehicle coming in?

I need some minor trim pieces from the inside and apparently no junk yard can be assed to inventory/pull them.

Need to find a u pull it that actually has the vehicle I want to pull from.

Being you really have no real clue what that parts transaction was about I have paid off my monthly invoice because I was there. Sometimes a check over a thousand dollars. Walked out with 2 packs of stainless lock nuts.

Well from reading your post it seemed you wanted to buy a new truck and part it out.

Building a truck one piece at a time from parts figuring in the overhead and parts at list prices is completely different. The way I see things.

This idea is completely impractical, however, I'm all for it! Kind of like how I get sucked into thinking about all the possibilities of what could happen if I was Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, I picked the perfect March Madness bracket, or won the lottery. It sure would be fun to watch, but I can put it on the list of things I'll never get to experience.

Check with your local pick and pull or whatever they call it out there; maybe they have text/email alerts as every place is different (I'm in CA).

Also, row52.com might help as they're paired with a large number of recyclers and they might work with someone in your area.

what i tend to see with old car part-outs is that all the commonly damaged items go really fast. front bumper, quarter panels, interior trim parts. but the biggest thing is that you only ever have '1' of each item to sell.

after those common bolted-on items go, you're left with the big parts that don't really fail. front/rear diffs, brakes(easier/cheaper to get re-man's from the parts stores with a warranty), radiator, motor, chassis, body, dash, gauges and computers(digitally paired together, can't be sold separately), composite bed, window glass. in all reality, it will either take a firesale price that reduces your overall profits to barely breaking even to move the big items, or a desperate need from someone with pockets deeper than sense that is entirely opposed to having the insurance they're generally going to have anyways pay for those things.

this is why pick-n-pull yards generally have cars sitting around for 5+ years.

in the end, after accounting for the time and effort to list the parts, pull the parts off, negotiate(no one's ever going to pay your asking price), renegotiate because the person doesn't show up. and re-re-negotiate because the person doesn't show up. and re-re-re-negotiate because the person doesn't show up... then you'll maybe just come out ahead of the trucks original price.

there's a reason junkyard owners don't have a 2nd house in the hamptons.

Ok let’s say you had all the time in the world to do the work and pull your truck apart and wait months or years for the right buyer, that alone is a financial hit which I’m sure will negate any profit but your brand new parts will have to be sold as used because technically it is even if you ship your truck home from the stealership
Brand new trd Tacoma off road 4x4 cost 42k don’t see how it’s feasible to turn that anywhere near 84k unless you haul drugs in it

this idea sounds just about as dumb as the guy who wants to buy a new 3rd gen to keep as a 'collector's item'. yeah, maybe you can make a little cash on the transaction, but not without also taking on a huge amount of work and risk, not to mention the space required to disassemble the truck and store said parts.
