And here my vehicle was the opposite, completely dry climate, etc experiencing the same

So it's not an outside influence

Probably just the way the plunger works, and that center piecing wearing down over time

Were your contacts worn down most of the way on just one side?

Not quoting anyone makes it hard to figure out who you're asking.

Can't say, you can only wait for others to chime in as I've only rebuilt 1 Toyota starter, and I posted my pics.

My response was to the other member regarding outside factors being an influence yet both starters experiencing the same uneven contact in different climates.

For being something done at the 250k mark, I'd say it has served it's purpose beyond what is expected to even bother with figuring out why it wore down the way it did.

That's one thing I've found commonly mentioned is that, people replace their starters (stupidly) or rebuild them at well over 200k miles. And often times those that wasted money on a new starter, did so for a misdiagnosed failure to start.

Plenty of other vehicle manufacturers have starters going out on them at the 80k - 150k mark.

If Toyotas are lasting a lot longer, why question it?

There are times where people think an item is a 'lifetime' part. Some parts can be with a rebuild every now and then.

But it's crazy that some people would think a leaf pack or shock or some other part (that requires maintenance at a higher interval) should last forever, without ever touching said part(s).

Just speaking out in general, not that you made this claim at all.

Interesting my contacts were both worn paper thin mileage was 200,000 not near as much dirt and grit.

I have several Toyota starters in pieces never had any that dirty in the solenoid.

    OP -

Did you have any problems deciding where to put those thin paper gaskets (insulators, actually)? For some reason I had a problem figuring out exactly where they went.

    Bivouac -

I had to replace my contacts at about the 60K miles point. I don't do river crossings, but when I'm off-road I do a lot of start-ups. My contacts were a helluva lot worse than those shown. I now have 120K miles on the truck. Prolly ought to consider doing that job again...:goingcrazy:

The way I look at things it can never hurt.

Not sure if I would pull the starter without another reason to need to take it out.

My use was long trips 200 miles or so a few stops.

Local 10 stops and starts within 20 miles.
