That tool is called a multimeter.

Tons of members here are familiar with its use.

There are great YouTube tutorials for beginners.

You will need (2) plug in terminal wire leads to check anything. You can test voltage, amperage, connectivity, etc. when trying to diagnose various issues.

Yeah lol I know what a multimeter is. Yall are awesome. But yeah I mean this one in particular. I'll admit it's got symbols I don't understand but it did come with a bunch of neat leads and Amp clamp and fuse testing thing.

I just got the bishko manuals for my 1st gen and my 3rd gen 4runner and I'm bout to go deep on a 3rz with an intermittent idle issue with no codes. I'm gonna check and see if there's a tool thread on here that'd be cool

Cornwell Es-C585 is a $100.00 plus Meter designed for automotive use .

Do a search on that should lead you to all the information you need!

    They have an online Catalog

Dwell is the length of time that the ignition points stay open to allow the ignition coil to build enough charge for a proper spark. (Plugs, points, & condenser days.) The two symbols for the volts are for DC and AC.

My bad. There's a wide range of knowledge bases that post here. Hopefully you didn't take my post as condescending.

Not at all brother. I've always wrenched since I was young with my dad but it was old ford trucks and basic things keeping moms and my own vehicles on the road. Now that 90s and 200s toyotas are the "old" stuff it's at the time in these things lives where odd nearly unsolvable electrical based issues come up so I'm trying to get on the fast track and learn this stuff.

The diagnostic tools just change with the times.

A Multi meter has always been around . Just not as depended on as in The 60`s

The timing Light and tach and dwell meter got up dated to at least a code reader or scanner. A oscilloscope is nice A coolant tester and a Infrared heat gun.

That is a nice meter you have old but quite useful .

I'd like to be able to see wave forms. Also I'd like to be able to graph live data. Oscilloscope....maybe 2 channels is enough.

What's really needed is a good scan tool that you can get into live data....

when you have that.....you dont have to throw parts at problems....

the cheapies wont allow you to see on the solenoid level....

    like egr....or vsv purge.....

A cable tracer would go nicely with you mm...

It really comes down to just all you might get into working on.

I give thought to the future what I might get into.

Right, eight channel would be awesome but just wayyyy tooo expensive. Ideal would be 4 but 2 could compare known good suspected bad.

I have a Innova device that has live data. Would like one that could graph multiple pids at the same time and allow control of switching valves etc. But under like 600 bucks

For the price this is great mini oscilloscope with data export. Not auto-specific but excellent bang/buck.

I originally got one because it is not tied to a ground but now use them as a go-to based on convenience. Accuracy is better than expected.
