Now it is time to practice out of position Tig welding.

Long ago in school the teacher was retired air force ! We started Tig with Thumb Controls his theory was anyone could use a foot control .

A lot of truth to that. I was taught on an older lift arc machine. Not having the high frequency start was some of the most annoying stuff ever.

Ha Ha to me Lift Arc is a new concept! Lift Arc is easy to pick when everything is working like it should .

Scratch start that was indeed a royal pain to not contaminate your tungsten.

just what brand torch do you have?

Having a lighter smaller torch if you weld all day makes a difference.

I should fix the two coolers I have and sell one.

    Figured I'd ask here first.
To those more knowledgeable about welding

Is there a way to get paid, to learn to weld?
I understand that if yes, said pay would be lower than an actually employed practicing professional

hopefully this is not a wild concept. Perhaps it was back in the day.
But, from what I have seen, for many years, this is a thing in other professions.

-auto mechanic. No education. You apprentice at a dealership and it's basically paid OJT training. To include actual classes. Working and learning at the same time.
-electrician; co-worker got paid to study it
-HVAC, same thing. Buddy got paid to go to school for it, the school either was the same as the employer, or had partnership with a major one
-union lineman, told me he got paid to study it

I am told that in such blue collar trades, that there is such a shortage of workers, that organizations literally pay people to learn and get into it.

Not to mention, if any traditional financial aid methods can be used to pay
like FAFSA, in state waived tuition at community college if they offer it, etc.
I assume FAFSA will be less amount if it's just welding,
as opposed to fulltime coursework towards this or that 4yr degree

Obviously there is always ripoffs out there.
For example, UTI, in the automotive field. Expensive. Does not teach. Is not required.
And looked down upon akin to a gambling debt. Starts day one of working at a shop $20-30k in debt, before buying box or tools, to enter a low wage profession.
One dealer I worked at. Lots of techs. Probably 99% of them self-taught to include myself.
One went to UTI. He later installed brake pads backwards. At no point during any interview process in recent memory, was asked about having ever attended "UTI"

Why I am I looking into this?
-need to learn to weld, it's a useful skill
-tired of my job where I don't learn useful shit and just benefit some other guy I don't know all day

If "get paid to learn" is a thing, would it be profitable? No.
Hopefully it would be just enough to survive.
But who knows. Maybe there is no such thing.
Maybe the way to learn is simply continue working current field, with evening classes on the side for hopefully free at a local CC.

It’s not entirely impossible. I had a guy hired in as a saw operator and he’s been working under my supervision for the past 6-8 months to learn fabrication.

    I'd just learn at home.

It's not difficult to pick up, and there are plenty of videos that'll get you on the right track.

Most important part is just getting time under the hood.

As for trades, that all depends where you live.

Here there are a shit ton of welders and people in HVAC. Fortunately there's always room for employment even.

On an unrelated note, went to the local shop to grab some remnants. Owner was gone but the foreman let me have some cold rolled 3/16" and 12 gauge all for free

First Question Just how old are you?? What do you do now?? Are you able to travel ??

Being Honest The older you are the harder it is to get paid training. Unless it is a field the business just closed and the skills you have are no longer in demand.

Had a good friend Auto Tech Went to welding school thinking of changing careers . The entry level pay to his current earnings was to large of a pay cut .This might have been 10 years ago.

The money for fabricators is better then just being a welder.

Get out knock on Doors explain just what you want you might get lucky.

As a Mill Wright most of my life every chance at classes the employer offered I took.

I can`t help in California!! Just General what I know in my area.

I know a few of the larger the companies in my area that once your in the door will train you in welding till you are able to pass the code test you need to weld to.

Some like pulling no experience people off the street that have no bad habits that need broken.

in your Area reach out to your local American Welding Society chapter another is schools that teach adult education. No idea of the response you might get in your area .

    Good Luck !!

No doubt glad to be rid of those small pieces .

The fact you bake goodies might have you well liked never hurts .

Your most likely not a pain in the butt customer.

Yeah, he was telling me that he had been in charge lately of getting rid of a ton of steel

Big pieces like these are "small" to them so they just toss it all

And yeah I can come off really abrasive on the forums at times but everyone that knows me personally here will tell ya I'm super easy going

We all got our own battles, no point in being mean to one another

    Have a good weekend! :fistbump:

You come across to me as pretty laid back to me.

Are you subjected to being called back to active duty?

Just one of these will get me plenty to cut out from -

    20230901_161757.jpg

This is what the 12 gauge will be used for these, 2 of each -

    Screenshot 2023-08-30 201446.png

    Screenshot 2023-08-30 185335.png

Since it'll be maybe a year or so until we turn the guest bedroom into an office, I'm going to make a dedicated joystick and dedicated throttle stand.

I drew these up as legs, and because 12 gauge is pretty stiff on its own, I opted to cut out some areas for weight savings. Added a touch to the whole thing by drawing in the joystick brand logo.

As for the holes, the legs will consist of two plates bolted together but spaced apart by about 5" with the use of these hollow aluminum rods -

    81FhWfx1e+L._AC_SL1500_.jpg

The bend at the top will serve as a means of mounting a piece of hardwood for a small platform. Once they arrive, I'll put a small radius on each corner then stain them.

Legs will be painted black, and with the aluminum/stainless hardware it'll give it an industrial look.

Very laid back; life's been rough for the first 18 years give or take..hell call it 28 years

That and life's way too short to be upset or make it hard for anyone

As for active duty, nope as I did my time and got out in 2009; 4 years following that I was on inactive-reserve where I could've been called back but that all now was over 10 years ago so no chance I'll ever be called back

That and I'm on disability for the rest of my life

not old. Mechanic. Yes able to travel.
In CA where I’m guessing most people don’t want to weld or any blue collar trade.

I just listened to an interview with Gov of SD. She was saying they have a metric shit ton of jobs openings with well paying apprenticeships. Granted, there's relocation but it might be worth checking out. Good luck.
