On my power steering pump there are 2 vacuum hoses that run between intake manifold and the pump connected with some sort of fitting/valve (?) . What function does this serve ? It is not even shown in my Toyota Service manual .

I have had an intermittent growl from the pump . Today I noticed one of the hoses was dry rotted on the bottom side so it was not doing much as far as holding a vacuum . I replaced the hose and the growl seems to have abated .

I used to know this if I remember correct this allows extra air to be drawn into the engine to ramp up the idle .

When the demand on the power steering increases

When these valves fail ATF can be drawn into the engine.

Thanks for the response . How would I know if the valve were to fail ?

    Always !!

    Force of habit from Work.

Always mention the worst possible consequences when writing work orders .

For the most it was cover your butt . A possible problem not noted in writing reflects badly on our company.

The level of fluid in the Power Steering pump reservoir will get lower with no visible leaks.

A massive leak will cause more smoke in the exhaust .
