Is there any way to not have the AC come on with the recirc mode on on startup?
I know I can just shut it off after I start but sometimes I forget.

No, it defaults to recirc on unless the temperatures outside are low enough that it doesn’t want to recirc. I believe that’s around 70 or something like that. The owner’s manual goes over the conditions for choosing recirc/fresh.

Is there a specific reason why you wish to turn it off? I find mine does a pretty dang good job just leaving the system set to auto and choosing a temp I like.

In any climate control system I have ever had, including Toyota, the system would resume whatever status it was left in when shut down. The one exception I can recall was in a newer Buick I had with remote start. If I started it on a hot day when it had been sitting in the sun all day (work), it would start up in full-blown cool-down mode (recirc, full fan, etc

to meet the set temp as quickly as possible. Same thing in winter weather. Set temp and current outside temp seemed to be in control.

I just would like it to resume where I had it last time I was in it. Don't need to use recirc here in SoCal unless I want to shut out the outside air.

I see. Well, unfortunately for your wishes, the answer is no. The owner’s manual outlines that it defaults to recirculate anytime the key is on and the temps outside are greater than 75°.

I'm 70 but how hard would it be for Toyota to let me decide to circ or not to circ?

There may be an option in techstream. If you set compressor mode to manual that may be what you're looking for. I'm not 100% sure on that.

If anything, from those options I believe it would be the outside air mode auto switch function. Not for sure on that though.

I’m curious, what is a good dongle to buy for techstream? My VFTuner doesn’t seem to be compatible.

I'm having an interesting problem. I'm using the orange dongle that came with ovtune. It used to work with techstream but no longer works. Still works fine with vftune.

Regardless of your age, you can decide, but they have the default set for their design.

Some harken back to the good ol days, which they were, but the here-n-now is we live in a time where things are automated for safety, efficiency, performance, etc. Some embrace it, and some resist it. The other workaround is to drive an old vehicle.

I'm an old geezer too. I think these (and all) companies think it is in the consumers best interest to do the thinking for them.

They either have their inflated heads up their tight azzez or they are correct in thinking the youngsters of today can't think for themselves.
I opt for the a combination of those two theories with an emphasis on the latter.

No so much the youngsters. It's the karens with their incredibly difficult to listen to whining. They want ridiculous things like rear coil springs, rear disc brakes, rear seat a/c, 600hp, 80mpg, and 15 speed automatic transmissions. You know, all the most important things. Reliability doesn't matter if if the competition has blindspot mirrors and you don't. I think a reliable vehicle could be produced without all the gimmicks. That won't happen, it isn't what the karens want.

Most of the automatic climate control systems I have had would eventually switch back to fresh air automatically once the temperature selected was reached. To the best of my memory, none of them ever switched back to recirc. I had one car that could be set to automatically switch out of recirc after a a selected period of time regardless of the set temperature. That system also had a sun-angle sensor, as well as a humidity sensor to switch on the compressor if the windshield started to fog up. (and turn it off once the fog cleared. The rear-defrost would turn on and off automatically as well. Both worked perfectly.
