Loud whistling noise underneath when accelerating

• Any idea what this whistling sound is? I attached a video, hope it worked

• Definitely seems tied to when I accelerate, but only at light levels of acceleration. When I press the gas harder it gets higher pitched then goes away
• This was happening 2 months ago, had a guy look at it, said drive shaft was fine. He threw lube on it and it went away
• On the highway I still hear the noise occasionally, doesn’t necessarily seem tied to accelerating then
• I’m currently finishing up a cross country drive, have 3 more hours to go in North Carolina but wondering if I can make it there
• Any ideas? Thanks

Sorry, trying to work off my phone. Pulled up my laptop and was able to get my videos to YouTube. Forgive the wind, I couldn't think of another way to get the noise.

I would be blown away if it isn't the driveshaft, when I drive slowly I can hear the squeaking following a circular motion (i.e. it comes and goes as it rotates)

IDK, sounds more like a body, frame, or suspension squeak that happens to have a sympathetic resonance with some rotating part. But it doesn't sound like a rotating part directly, because it seems to come and go a bit. The fact that it "comes and goes" as speed / RPMs rise, rather than rising steadily and uniformly with RPMs, suggests that the squeak is being excited at certain frequencies (RPMs) but not others?

 

It does sound like squeaky springs or exhaust bracket. Carrier bearing can squeak like that too.

 

Reminds me of the leaf springs

 

Maybe it is the carrier bearing, when I’m at low speeds, the squeak is slower and rotational sounding. It sounds like it’s going around in a circle or something


There’s also what feels like some significant vibrating going on

 

How many miles on your truck? Could be squeeky leafs or wheel bearings, u-joint-s , carrier bearing. Hard to tell.

 

Chock the wheels and put it in N w/ the parking brake on.
Crawl under and grab the driveshaft by the cb and shake it w/ both hands.
There shouldn't be any play.

 

Where in NC are you? Grab CB and wiggle if there is play rubber could be worn.

 

Jack it up and rest the jacks on the frame.

Put it in drive and go.

If you don't hear the noise, driving on the jacks, then you can suspect the suspension as being what causes the noise.

You can get out and stand back if you hear the noise, to pinpoint where it is coming from.

If the truck falls off the jacks and drives itself off, then you shouldn't be doing your own diagnostics

A long zip tie around the driveshaft so it slaps the bottom of the truck every revolution is another good one.

 

Was just in Raleigh but moving to Outer Banks, started from Austin.

truck only has 80k miles on it. I do have bigger tires and method wheels in.

Was in a bit of a bind (was supposed to pick up my wife and 5 week old daughter at the airport). Had them rent a car and drive separate so if I don’t make it at least they won’t be stranded on the side of the road.

will try the tests y’all mentioned when I get there, about 2 hours out, fingers crossed. Just odd to me, when my guy lubed up the drive shaft last time. It went away

 

If it's the CB you'll be fine for a bit.

Does that mean it wasn't the CB?

 

Let's wait em out could be as it's an 11' and 80k on it rubber degenerates (like we do). Mine squeeked when it went.

 

I haven't had a chance to run through all of the recs, the rental car, wife and kiddo have me pulling my hair out a bit.

Here is the latest:

• Bought a grease gun, front and rear took it well, middle zerk doesn't appear to be taking any grease (no signs of the new or old stuff coming through). I can also wiggle the middle u-joint zerk when I touch it
• Am I crazy, or are there only 3 zerks? Watched what feels like 500 videos today and seems like I should have more?
• I've tested the give/wiggle multiple times this trip, it's never had any signs of give until I greased it just now. There's a chance I yanked on it too hard when I pulled the gun off the zerk? Idk, now when I move it back and forth it 100% has wiggle where it didn't before. the video does a poor job of showing it
• Still plan on doing the other tests, was just hoping this might be a quick fix that would buy me some time

MY favorite is all the pops and creaks my truck will make at times before I grease just the right place. Makes a funny experience for people outside of the truck when I'm pulling into a parking lot. Curious to see what the culprit is.
