    Hi everyone,

I have been looking to make my way over to the high passes of Colorado and visit ouray, silverton ect. Is the Colorado OHV permit required for any of the passes nearby? Any guidance is appreciated! Looking at Imogene, Ophir, engineer pass ect.

Yes, if it is designated as an OHV trail.

A Colorado OHV Permit is required for all plated, street legal vehicles (resident and nonresident) when traveling on any designated OHV trail and/or open area for recreational use on public lands.

I have lived in Colorado my whole life (47 years). I never knew you needed a permit for that stuff :anonymous: Of course, I never off road. What is the point of the permit?

It's new in the last year or two. Not sure how hard they enforce it for plated vehicles.

Probably to fund the government and for restoration purposes.

This clouds it a bit more. Just because a road is open to OHV's does not designate it as an OHV trail.
Says plated vehicles are ok. Not sure if those passes are designated as county roads or jeep trails.

The roads you mentioned are all county or state roads. No permit necessary on plated vehicles. Permits are for USFS or BLM roads/trails.

Think of it as another tax.
They like to disguise new taxes as fees given the pesky restraints of TABOR.
Rest assured the funds will be misappropriated just as efficiently as if it were earmarked as a tax.
Your senator's nephew thanks you for contributing to the multi million dollar grant he received to study underwater gerbil flatulence.

It is vastly important to know what happens when gerbils fart underwater. I for one am glad 35% of my paycheck goes to this stuff…

I figured that is what it was. If only it wasn’t for that pesky TABOR!!

I never heard of this permit and have been on trails for the past two years.

Yeah I thought it was mostly for the side-by-side brigades. Not for trucks.

It does on certain USFS or BLM roads. They are noted on USFS/BLM travel management maps. The roads around Silverton and Ouray previously mentioned are all state and county roads so your license plate works for your truck
