Sell my '23 TRD OR for '06 4runner?

I'm considering selling my current truck for an '06 4runner limited with around 140k miles. The Tacoma is paid for and the 4Runner is from a family member who is the original owner and it's been well maintained and running fine. The motivation would be to invest the extra money, have cheaper insurance and I just don't drive that much. The 4runner would be either market value to a few grand under.

I like the Tacoma, but it's just not being used and it's a depreciating asset. 2 things I won't do is have 2 vehicles or flip the 4runner for a profit. Just curious to hear people's thoughts. I know this is a Tacoma forum, so this probably won't go well for me.

 

Depends on your lifestyle. We have a 4Runner and a Tacoma. We use the Tacoma far more than the 4Runner. Both are relatively new.

A few things to think about are things such as age. Yes, that 4Runner was probably taken care of well. But it is still a 17 year old vehicle and will need repairs at some point. Toyota or not, all vehicles run into these issues as they age.

Both are depreciating assets. If you were concerned about that, buying something brand new wasn't the way to go in the first place. But, now would be the time to sell since vehicles tend to lose the bulk of their value within the first 3 years. You'll likely take a loss on the Tacoma anyway.

On the flip side, the 4Runner will be simpler to work on and operate.

 

I have and ‘04 4Runner. 240k milage. Runs and drives great but does need paint. I’m finding plastic parts breaking here and there as it’s age will do that. Still, we do still drive it but don’t trust it for long trips.

 

I wouldn't do it personally, but i can understand where you're coming from. You'll go from a nice new warranty truck to a an older suv where anything could go wrong. I think it will hold its value while the tacoma will slowly depreciate. What prompted the new truck purchase anyway-new job, move, peer pressure, etc? Sounds like you've made some changes and now want to revert back to your prior self.

Since you bring up investing the money, and saving money, it sounds like you are on that mind track. Since you own the tacoma, why not aggressively save, max your 401k or remove a chunk of money from your paycheck for savings to grow. I invest in index funds, not overly aggressive, savings account, 401k and pay down debt as quickly as i can(usually). If you really don't drive much, want to save on insurance, and have this nicely maintained 4runner i think you answered your own question. At the end of the day, its just an older toyota.

 

The only thing that scares me is that it’s an 06’
Early 06’ models suffered from head gasket problems.
Reports says, late model 06’s got the new gaskets.
But we don’t have a definitive date.

 

I had a 2017 Tacoma TRD OR. Traded it for a Miata(was fun), then traded that for my current 05 V8 T4R. I've not had the T4R for very long, but I find it scratches all the itches of utility I really used the Tacoma for (people or stuff, very rarely both), plus it's a better trail vehicle and the V8 4R actually beats my TRDOR for tow capacity. It's also a far more comfortable vehicle. For me, that math is EASY. YMMV.
