Buying the parts one at a time would cost a lot more than the whole vehicle, as you've assumed from your observation.

Most parts are sold OTC at a dealer around 100% markup. Meaning a 50% off sale would be break even for them.

Other than some singular quirky hard to find bits, you'll never find a buyer at those prices/markup.

And assuming your time is worth something, as well as the place to store it and do the work, I'm not sure if you could even break even.

If your approach was profitable, salvage yards with capital would already be doing it, and OEs would be blacklisting them from further purchases.

 

Agree if it was that big of a money maker it would be very popular.

Driving the Price of new vehicles even higher !!

Rejected vehicles coming off the line get crushed and go for scrap unless it changed.

 

only with significant defects. many lines have a re-work area where they can do a good number of fixes, and then re-certify before adding it back into the line. but i probably shouldn't even post that here, as there's no carfax on which vehicles get re-worked, i'm going to end everyone here into a panic that they got a 'defective' truck...

 

I was recalling back in the late seventies .

I watched it happen and asked one of the plant maintenance mechanics what the story was. I was told that it was a better tax write off to do the whole vehicle.

 

With the amount of parts inventory out there, especially with newer trucks having warranty. I'd imagine it would take a long time to find buyers. Most probably wouldn't trust your parts either

 

I have a tough time selling a transfer case to market place A Holes. I cant imagine selling 3000 parts out like that.

truth. it's hard enough to literally give away a brand new car on facebook without dealing with 100 idiots before 1 success. i can't imagine doing that for every. single. part.

I parted a new-ish car out years ago and it sucked. I can’t remember what kind of car it was for the life of me though.
Some parts went really quick (tires, wheels, audio, seats). A few odds and ends took a bit longer, but most of it sat forever.
Trying to market all the pieces and finding buyers was a big problem for me. I ended up selling it to Pick and Pull.

 

I feel like this would make a good YouTube video.

Someone documents the process over a years time.

The video revenue might make more than the process lol.

People do this with RC cars everyday. Individual parts are worth 10x the price of the RC. Not joke.

 

people do it with power tool kits as well. especially this time of year, all the major brands start having massive specials on 'buy 'x', get abattery/tool free'. many times, the sale price alone is cheaper than the single product being purchased, and the 'free' item is worth a minimum another $150 retail. plenty of space for resale.

 

Doing it at a commercial scale where you have costs for disassembly labor, storage, and listing/selling, isn't profitable.
