To each their own, but I have never quite understood the mindset of replacing your truck with the exact same truck, just a newer year (outside of extenuating circumstances). Especially if it costs more and/or creates more debt. Because why, they added CarPlay?

For this guy, I wouldn't do it. You are repurchasing almost the same truck.

See what the 2024 Tacoma brings to the table after a test drive.

I've been wanting to upgrade my tow rig since 2020, but I just can't justify the cost. Now since 2024 model has stepped up the whole truck I may have to look into one in 2026 when my current truck is 10 years old and probably 125k miles. It still blows my mind that even though my truck had no lean against the title from day one, at ten years old this truck still will have cost me 480.00 per month. The longer I own it, the more that number goes down.

OP specifically said he’s going from a DCSB to a DCLB. So different trucks/body but same engine, transmission, etc…. Some will interpret that as a different truck, some will interpret it as the same truck I guess.

You’re also gonna have to be super lucky to get an 4th gen anytime soon and even luckier to get one for the same price as the OP posted. Once they are released in the wild, the trade in value for a ‘21 is likely to drop a bit as well.

Seems like the trade in value is pretty good..comes down to your financial situation. If it were me I would see what the 2024s will offer and get the original truck paid off.

What’s the interest rate on your current truck? If you can go 36-48 mo and get 2.9% if your region offers it and you’re paying 3.9-5.9 now then you’re saving additionally on the loan. Also Lunar Rock is the best.

Same vehicle but slightly longer bed. Why won’t you wait a year for the 4th gen .

If it were me, I would guess that it’s going to be hard to get a 4th gen within the next 6-8 months, trade in value will decrease once they are released, and it will likely be more expensive…but valid question. I would like to hear the OP’s answer.

Yeah I always do have trouble parking my long bed. Sometimes I just circle the lot for hours waiting to be brave enough to attempt to park it. I always find it funny people without long beds always want to say how hard it is to park. If the trucks are 99% the same according to you, why would parking suddenly suck with an extra foot of bed?

    This.

It wouldn't be my choice if I had to park in heavily congested areas, but then again neither would a short bed

If you can afford to do it, why not, you live once you should enjoy the toys that you buy.

However, if you can’t afford it without payments, maybe it isn’t the best move, and you can take solace in the fact the longer truck has some downsides.

    Don’t

take your wife/family/girlfriend on a vacation you wouldn’t normally do. Then remember the vacation that one time in a blue moon that you wish you could put a 6 foot long item in your truck bed and close the tailgate.

I thought you were being sarcastic and making fun of the parking ”problem” until I got to the end.

It's interesting to read all the opinions and see there is no consensus! There's both an analytical and an emotional component to buying. No one, but you, can gauge the latter.

Your ambivalence is actually a good thing! Take that to the dealer and express your reluctance and uncertainty, then drop the hammer and make an offer that removes any doubt in your mind. Be prepared to walk, but perhaps not for long. Let us know how you make out.
