It's my understanding that the ECU isn't going to run other injectors unless you were able to get a tune for it somehow. I've seen talk about the 03's and 04's being tuneable to a small degree.

I would also check the drivers side ball flange on the DT Headers for an exhaust leak. it's a common spot for a leak and can cause a false lean consition making it runs rich (my DT Headers did the same thing before the turbo kit went on and ironically I still have a leak in the same spot causing the same false lean conditions).

Only going up to 250 shouldn't cause it to get so rich it dies. You can get over 40% compensation from the factory ECU (provided it has time to learn, otherwise 20% short term)

So I’m about half way through the 219 pages of this thread and need to ask a fairly simple question I think.

I bought a 2000 Tacoma that was in pieces since the guy gave up in the middle of doing a frame swap. The truck sat in the weather for 3 years so biggest issue is rusty fasteners/steel and oxidation on the aluminum of the engine, transmission, tcase- all of which can be refurbished with some sweat.

It has 90k miles, body is close to perfect, same drivetrain as my 340k mile 99 that’s falling apart, plan is to take the best parts of both - wheels/tires, diffs, suspension, frame, skids, bumpers, etc from the 99, engine, trans, tcase, body from the 2000, basically make 2 trucks again, sell the one with all the wear (or turn it into a crawler if I can get it past my wife), keep the good truck.

Getting to my point, the 2000 came with a factory installed black supercharger, which sat out in the weather mounted to the engine, exterior is very weathered.

Finally got around to tearing into it, and the interior appears to be in excellent condition, plans to refinish the exterior.

I have a rebuild kit for the snout and was going to buy double sealed cup bearings for the rotors in case I go meth. Have a press, I’m confident I can do the work myself. Well aware can’t take the rotors/timing gears apart, no intention to do so.

My question is in regards to the rotors themselves. They're in near perfect condition, but have a few spots the coating is starting to flake off.

Would the advice be I send it off to Jon Bond or The High Speed Lab to be serviced and have the rotors recoated or would you guys just run it?

If the advice was to service it, do you recommend one place vs the other?

If its just some flakes I would just run it.
If your super picky get them recoated by Jon Bond NOT HSL. HSL works is NOT the best, my rotors were peeling a year after my rebuild, I DON'T recommend them.. Plenty of others here have had the same experience and waiting times up to 6 months

So I'm standing at the edge of the rabbit hole. Read all 219 pages!
Anyone in the Houston, TX area that is willing to take me for a ride so I can see what these Supercharger's can do?

Thank you, your opinion matters, definitely makes matters easier

A bit off topic, but is it typical for these things to smell like baby poop/dirty feet/strong blue cheese when you open them up?

The odor when I cracked it open was unpleasant to say the least

Yup. The TVS1320 for the 4.0 I worked on was the same. It's the supercharger oil.

Can anyone make any recommendations to get the most out of the new SC and still pass emissions in Texas.
From what I understand, using a Haltech 2500 and Meth kit is out of the question.
Called a local shop recommended by Thomas at Haltech in Houston, but they have never done anything with a 1st Gen. Sounds like all I can do is bolt it on, 7th Injector if it pings and thats what I get.

I read in another thread on FB that Magnuson is saying the 7th will be 'unnecessary' with this one, but that's what they said about the last generation of supercharger too at first and we all know how that turned out.

If your smog restrictions are like ours in CA, you basically can't modify it at all unless whatever modification you're doing is CARB certified. The URD 7th injector is not. That being said, I added the 7th injector to my TRD blower and have passed smog 3 times with it on. It's not really that obvious that it's there unless they are actively looking for it.

Depends on your smog station/worker too, some of them are real particular about combing over everything.

Haltech is not going to pass emissions, you can uninstall the Haltech and plug the stock ECU in to pass as an option as long as you’re using the stock injectors if u want and that takes about 15 minutes

I spoke with Gabe later on and he said the same thing. Did not know I would have to put the stock plugs back in. From what understand about this setup, it will be worth it.

That's a good idea, thanks, I didn't know about this.
I do live in one of the counties required for the emissions testing. My parents still live in the county so that will work out perfectly for me.
I'll still try plugging the stock ECU back in and hope that works.

I bet you could sneak a water meth kit through inspects if it is really tidy. What gives stuff away is brand names. Obviously, Haltech won't pass but like others said if you're willing to switch back to the stock pulley and swap the stock ecu back over you can switch back every time you need to be tested.

You shouldn't have to swap plugs. Larger injectors will be a problem when swapping back to the OEM ecu though.
