Doing my part to get us to the BIG 500K

 

It doesn’t have to be that fantastical, just wait until they want to “mail something”. I’m always amazed at the basics that seemed to skip them entirely. I raised my kids doing everything, but even with that, it seems school and social interaction failed them with everything else.

Yes.
Barley straw doesn't kill algae, but it inhibits new growth.

I was on the Board at my Club when we first started using it.
I well remember that Board meeting when the Lake Committee presented their findings.
This was perhaps 18-19 years ago.

Our Lake Committee had contacted the Penn State Extension Service for algae control recommendations.

We were in the process of draining the Lake in late Autumn preparatory to cleaning it out.
When the process was complete and as the Lake was refilling, we spread a narrow band of barley straw at intervals all along the shore.
It is held down by netting just below the waterline.

The Lake (7 acres) had previously required cleaning every, oh 8-10 years at most.
It was noticed that the recent proliferation of the resident Giant Canada Goose population was making things worse.

They were a separate (though related) problem, never solved.
Nothing worked to scare them away, and no one was willing to use sterner measures (shooting them all).
We had to permanently close the swimming area due to E- Coli bacteria contamination.

Butt anyway...

Since using Barley Straw, the Lake has not yet required draining and cleaning... though it will eventually.
It's important not to use too much barley straw.
