Why so few upgrades for the 1st gen IFS?

I know RCV and Lotus makes upgraded CVs for our trucks, but I was surprised to not find many viable options for beefed-up steering racks and front diffs. The OEM stuff is good enough for me, but surely there must be a market for those running bigger tires and running tough tracks. Why doesn't anyone offer an off-the-shelf option for a stronger rack and pinion and/or front diff?

Also, I'm curious what the chain of weakest-next-links are for those who've upgraded their CVs for running 35s and doing hardcore wheeling. Does the stock 7.5" hold up with Lotus axles, or would you have to REM-coat/cryo-treat the R&P?

Well I was just surprised at the lack of options for those who want put 5k or so into strengthening the IFS with bolt ones instead of fabbing up a SAS.

My friend made a sort of rack slider setup, but he needed to beef his stuff up cause he's also long travel. I cut out several of his custom fabbed parts for him.

Hits up Rubicon, Dusy, and other sorts of hard technical trails that require front and rear lockers and larger tires.

Depends, different application and different manners.

SAS offers real nice travel, on top of just having stronger components in general. The trade off being all the custom fab work.

Long travel is more forgiving for fast running, and is comprised of stronger than stock components as well. Thing is, fabrication isn't as intensive but still necessary.

I know you're just asking but let's not go off topic from your thread; not like you're going SAS or long travel anyway

 

Give and take. If money isn't an issue, I rather SA a v6 tacoma. Power is the main concern unless you trailer.

My dream truck would be a SAS pickup with a 3.4 swap. The Pre-Tacos are supposed to be way easier to SAS. Either that or an 80 series with a 5 speed swap.

 

I wouldn't say it's easier to SA a pre-taco. It will be easier at sourcing factory parts but if I was to built a pre-taco, it's definitely not with a factory mini axle. The mini WMS is too short IMO even with the IFS hubs.

And if you're going to 3.4 swap a pre-taco, might as well built a Taco so there's no stress on the engine swap. That will save you money and downtime.

 

80 front with t100 rear on a 2nd gen runner with a 3.4 would be nice.... just saying

Nope. 8.4 only. Should be plenty strong for 37s

9.5 is found on front and rear of all pre-80 series LC and just the rear of 80.

 

T100 have the 8.4 rear end with a 66.75" track width.

 

Yeah I might get at Eaton locker for my 8.4" eventually. They seem like a fine axle. Hell, I'd take another one for the front if I had any fab skills.
