I have a Tacoma PreRunner that I want to convert to 4x4.

I found a transmission on FB market place with 247k miles on it. It comes with just about everything to convert my Tacoma to 4x4, everything would cost me just shy of $800.00 dollars...

Should I buy this and invest on a rebuild kit.

Or should I buy another transmission with way lower miles but most likely above $2,000 dollars plus the rest of the parts to convert it to 4x4.

    Thank you for your advice/opinions.

Did the seller say the transmission needs a rebuild? Or you just assume it does based on mileage? Are you 2.7 (3rz) or 3.4 (5vz)? The R150F that pairs with the V6 is a tank. Or is this an auto trans you're looking at? Generally I'd steer towards the better deal, even if it's going to mean a lot more elbow grease needed on your end.

So here's a bit more info I forgot to add:

My Tacoma is a 2003 with auto transmission.
My tacoma has a 3.4 engine.

The transmission I want to buy is an automatic transmission that was taken out of a 1996 4runner.
    This 4runner had a 3.4 engine.

Hmm I've been reading that 01-04 4runners and tacomas had different 4x4 transmissions?

That 2001-04 were electrical while 00 and below 4x4 transmission had a cable pulley?

Would this be a problem since my tacoma is a 2003 and the 4x4 transmission comes from a 96 4runner?

I think it complicates things, but that you should be able to retrofit those parts from your current transmission. Honestly I know very little about auto transmissions, so hopefully someone else chimes in to clarify that part.

What about it needing a rebuild? Were you just referring to this throttle by wire/cable kickdown dillema?

It's less Tacoma and more mod
03-04 auto transmissions use an electronic pressure control solenoid, 02 and below uses a cable. You can swap the valve bodies but it's kinda involved.

Yes this is my daily driver.

Im.going to check your links. I've been interested in swapping to MT since for most of my life I've driven MT.

I will research more and make sure I have all the info I need then I'll start buying parts little by little.
