If you want to make it easy, I used this website for a 3rd member that came complete and ready to drop in. If you are 4x4 you will also need to do the front diff as well so you won't break anything. To my knowledge non elocker rear axels are 8.4 inch while rear axels with a factory locker are 8 inch

The size of 3rd member clamshell, tacoma has two different rear axels that they use. One is an 8 inch that has the factory e-locker, the other one is a 8.4 inch but doesn't have factory e-locker if you go to the link for east coast gear supply. you will see two different sizes.

The 3rd gen has an 8.75” differential (that’s the ring gear size) on TRD Pro and Off-Road models, as well as any manual transmission truck. Anything else has the 8” diff. So if your Sport is an automatic, then you have the 8”.

The front diffs are all the same 8” IFS clamshell on all 3rd gens.

If you want 4.88 and lockers, you can either buy all the parts for your diffs and have someone local do the install for you, or you can order pre assembled diffs from east coast gear supply and swap them in and send yours back.

So to be clear, I need to find a rear axle with a 8.75 diff to fit locker/4.88. Is that true for the IFS?
    thanks

Huh? The center of the axle (the differential - 3rd member) is removable. That part can be regeared and a locker installed to it, as well as change the gear ratio to 4.88. You don’t need to buy a new rear axle at all.

Lol no. Axles are same. Gearing and housing are different.
Call someone that knows something. They will tell you what you need.
