New 2023 TRD Notchy brake peddle, is it normal?

The description say pretty much everything.

When I first hit the break peddle there is a noticeable notchy feel to it, almost like there is a slight detent feeling, and a slight clunk when you first hit the break. It makes slow speed maneuvering a bit concerning. The breaks do feel plenty strong, they're not mushy or anything.

Is this considered normal? As I've read some reports of this but there was no clear answer. The truck only has 200 miles on it, so it's brand new. And no I didn't notice it on the test drive.

Thanks in advance. Lots of useful information here, I plan on getting a KDMAX tune in the near future to smooth out the goofy shifting and laggy throttle response.

My truck is newer... What I think you are describing is "normal" for these trucks. I take extra notice of it when parking in the garage and don't want to hit the workbench. I would use the word surge to describe it. My '07 did it too though. It's not ideal, but it is what it is. Have the dealer take a look and see what they say. I'd be curious. Blinders are always on during the test drive. You're test driving the thing because you want it... and you probably were not doing low speed maneuvering.

Mine felt like you were describing when new and now I don’t notice it as much. Probably a combination of the brakes wearing and me getting accustomed to it.

Thanks for the reply. I honestly do know if it was there or not during the test drive, and you're definitely right about not doing any slow maneuvering.

The surrge is what my 2010 SR5 had. That had to do with the throttle up when more power was required, like when you turn or the AC would kick in, it was bad on those trucks. This is totally different, it doesn't surge like the 10. The peddle actually has a notch in it, like two stages, and a bit of a clunk when you hit that point. It's not drastic, but it's definitely there. After you clear that spot the peddle feel fine.

Thanks. This is definitely feels like it's in the master cylinder not the calipers or wheel cylinders. I actually got under the dash and push the pedal with the truck off and you can definitely feel and here it right there.

In my limited amount of research it could have something to do with the electronic booster which is different than a normal vacuum boosted style. It's definitely annoying.

If you end up asking the dealership about it, let me know what they say or how they blow you off. If this very small sample size is all aware of the same thing, it is on someone's radar, and they probably won't do much unless we start running over groups of nuns or school kids on accident in parking lots.

Brakes (not breaks) on an Off Road are different than the SR5 or Sport because of off road gadgets. Pedal is different feel. I have had both and they are fine. Different feel but fine.

Yeah you're right brakes. Hope that made ya feel better. You're reply was of pretty much zero value.

    Lord forums never change. Lol

The SR does have a different vacuum assist system, the TRD uses an electronic assist system. So it would be hard to compare. But thanks for the curious response.✌️

At least he didn't bug ya about pedal not peddle ha ha.
My grandkids can't spell and often use the wrong spelling for the subject. I blame social media, gaming, made up words and abbreviations.

My 23 Trail Edition SR5 is the same, I was told this is normal by my dealer. Just hit 2k miles and it’s a little less obvious vs new. Maybe a bit of a break-in.

So why are you here? I asked a legitimate question using talk to text, and instead of answering said question you just nitpick spelling errors. Good lord.

So does anyone else have anything constructive to add? Should I just try to get used to it, or get it looked at?

I apologize for my egregious spelling errors, and I appreciate those who answered my question thoughtfully.

Sounds normal based on my experience with my TRD off road. The braking system doesn’t have the most “natural” feeling compared to other vehicles I’ve owned, including other Toyota trucks. It’s very notchy and grabby. It gets better with use and getting used to truck though. The brakes always stop well, but not the best feeling brakes when precision is needed. 3rd gen Tacomas are so jerky to drive but I love mine.

We give everyone shit here. We do it good naturedly. This forum is a throwback to old ways, not the new ways, when people could have fun. Self deprecating fun. So, you in or out? Can you talk shit or not? Can you take it as well as you dish it out? I can. Can you?
And while doing it, several smart people will drop knowledge. Good knowledge.
