A comment on the highlighted statement: Powder is significantly more durable than paint. There is crappy paint and there is good paint, good is way better than crappy paint. Properly prepped and cured high quality powder is a significant step up from the best paint. It is stronger and more chip resistant. Improper prepping or improper curing will cause all sorts of issues, but comparing properly applied quality paint to improperly applied low quality powder is a totally biased comparison. If you have ever had to strip quality powder you would be a believer.

Agreed. However, I will say this. The RCI powder coat is excellent from the factory, but if you use it abuse your armor the way it's meant to be, you will need to do paint repairs to prevent rust. At that point it can be advantageous to have good paint instead of powder coat. With my experience with RCI, their powder coat does not flake or bubble up which means when it does come off due to rock abrasion or impact, the edges are relatively smooth and you have the option to sand down the exposed metal and prime and paint it. The Ace hardware paint primer combo plus self-etching primer under it seems to be an excellent work and the matte black matches RCIs excellent powder coat so closely. You could hardly tell there was a repair when you're done.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I deal in the marine sector, particularity in electrical equipment mounted on ships. No powdercoat outperforms properly painted items in our industry. If it did, they would powdercoat all kinds of marine items that they do not. Powdercoat is even specifically prohibited “not acceptable” in many specifications.

While paint may chip easier, the corrosion is localized and tends not to propagate under the surface like it does with powdercoat.

Powdercoat was developed to allow unskilled people to apply an inexpensive coating, that looks very even and very flat, with minimal effort. It’s perfectly fine for what it is, but nothing compared to something properly painted.
