If the auto tows you to where the bike gets turned loose, I think you'd be ok. :bikewheelie:

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. A 110cc scooter to a vehicle. My daily is a manual and I couldn’t see myself driving a automatic car. As slow as the Matrix is it’s still fun banging it through the gears.

Got out on a ride today on the super tenere down the coast past Neptune's Net and Pepperdine.

Came home and actually gave the Super Ten a wash (it got a wash when I got it home last october) and an oil change / final drive gear oil change as it was time (~3k miles which was a little early but wanted to see how things looked as this was my first official full mileage oil change since I acquired the bike after I changed all the fluids when I got it home).

The way things came out looking, 3-4k miles for engine oil and 8oz of final drive oil (75w-90 valvoline synthetic) will be my standard, especially with how I beat on it in the canyons.

ITS SO NICE not having to do chain maintenance. 8oz of gear oil n call it good for multiple thousands of miles, never a worry about chain slack/adjusting, cleaning, lubing, just check tire pressures and GO.

The beauty of the super tenere is ... IT LOVES cheap oil. $16 for a 4 quart jug of conventional Rotella T4 15w40 (better shear strength vs synthetic for the rear driveshaft output), 10$ for an oil filter (I like HiFlo Filtro's HF204, but could probably source a filter for a few bucks cheaper at walmart from Fram/ etc if needed on the road as its a super standard oil filter), and 4$ worth of gear oil.

Total cost for keeping the Tenere drivetrain overly proper every 3-4k miles. $30

I have KTM buddies that will spend that amount on Oil filters (plural for one change) alone... then another 100+ in fancy "required" oil.... and we havent even gotten to the cost of chain maintenance / replacement.

I'd think an auto scooter would still be more fun to ride than an auto car to drive, just in my opinion.

    Dude...

I really think the Super Tenere is what I want for a final jack of all trades bike. I'd prefer if it could go 8K between oil changes like the CB500X, but hardly the end of the world.

I think it depends on the car. For a Tacoma I don't know that fun is the right word for most of the driving, even with a stick. Hell, I think that applied to most vehicles. Unless it's quick or handles really well, I don't put a ton of vehicles into the fun category. I love driving, but if it's not an exciting vehicle, I think I'd generally not abuse my hip just for commuting, grocery getting, road trips, etc.

Lets be real, KTM "required" oil isn't required, it's recommended just like Yamalube is for the Tenere. That same Rotella works just as well in the KTM as it does in the Yamaha.

Tbh 8k on an oil change is waaay too long for all of 3 quarts of oil that has the job of engine, transmission and clutch lubrication... all while spinning 6+k rpms... even with synthetic. Not a chance I'd be doing that long of an OCI.

I might stretch my oil change out to 5k if reports of the newer rotalla t6 15w40 synthetic come back good as far as shear strength. (Which is all of 24$ for the 4qt jug). But even then, refer to my paragraph above haha.

Hahah so true, but every time I go hey just use rotalla t4 15w40 or t6 5w40/15w40 (as those are the only ones JASO MA certified) they turn their nose up to the "cheap" oil.

I plan on 5K changed in the CB500X. If they say they can go 8K I figure I'm safe at 5. If the Super Tenere says it needs it at 3K, I'll do it at 3K. Even expensive oil is cheap compared to a new engine.

My one road get-off (as a king ranch F350 spun in the air above my head) involved my head hitting the street. The only scratches on the helmet were EXACTLY where 34.6 falls on the graphic, or, exactly where my 3/4 or 1/2 helmet would not have helped with. At all. It's a no brainer. pun intended. Can't find that photo right now, but it's telling.

Aside from the crash data...there's also 'summer in the midwest' to give you, er...food for thought?

I’ve always wondered that too. Or rain drops at 50mph, that shit stings. I like to ride with my visor open and sunglasses on to protect my eyes but there’s times I will close it (bugs/rain/dust/etc) and would hate to be riding with a half helmet.

in other news. The Tacoma and the GRiSO got some screen time last week. Used in a photo shoot for that trailer hitch you guys hate. I drove a 500# bike 400 miles through two major american cities (Indy and Cincy) and got 19 MPG on the day - it does make me dial my driving aggressiveness back - let's say 10%
