I've been looking into the steering rack job, and it honestly doesn't seem worth the trouble to attempt in my apartment parking lot. After buying a bearing puller kit, flare ratchets, etc., I'd only be saving a few hundred by doing it myself, and that's without accounting for me potentially wasting away a Sunday laying under the truck futzing around with it. I think I'll let someone with a lift who actually knows what they're doing handle this one.

The hell do you need a bearing puller for?

It mostly just seems like a miserable job to do without a lift.

$15 tool you should have anyway, comes with a lifetime warranty from HF. But shit even a good hammer blow knocks those loose. The hardest part of changing a rack is undoing the fluid lines, the rest is easy

You don't even need a jack, can do the whole thing on the ground if you wanted, easier with a jack but overall not a hard job in the slightest on a 1st gen. 2nd gen not so fun

    It's not.

Return everything you bought, and do what many of us said long ago.

Buy an OEM rack (Toyoda), and get it replaced at a shop. Keep the receipts for everything and list the truck for sale.

If you didn't want to buy said tool, auto zone/etc rents them out

Bet your neighbor has one, I have like 3 as I kept misplacing them and later found them

Just because it's "easy" doesn't mean it's a fin way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I just personally can't stand working on my back for long; I start to get neck pain and vertigo after a half hour or so.

Great kit, but you want that for multiple vehicles and you won't even use everything

I mean, sure that's a quality set I'd recommend it too if I was doing a write up. But I've done 5 racks now and can tell you that you won't need those.

You need one of these... or one of these and a pipe wrench... everything else is regular tools, a flare wrench set wouldn't hurt but you can get one for $10-$15

Have you considered a new prius with warranty... did you know Hyundai and Kia offer a 100k mi drivetrain warranty?

Think HF still has their "buy 25 worth of stuff get a free tool kit/rags/straps" sale going on?

Why post it for sale? $500 of labor isn't the end of the world if it's a reputable shop. Sure, it's be nice to save money, but I'm getting older and beginning to grapple with my mortality and the value of time.

Because of the headache every little issue causes you.

We have all encouraged you to DIY, but you always have an excuse.

Your post proves it "getting older"? You're 10 years younger than most of us here.

Haven't grown out of rationalizing your decisions to strangers though ;) so you're probably young enough to save the grand or so this'll cost.
