Hey, "door condom" was an excellent and creative answer, just not the one our judges were looking for.

Yeah, but as a fellow Californian, you should agree that plastic bags are just as scary and dangerous as guns, or the pornography industry. Thank god we can outlaw them all here!

First post, reopens a dead thread to give a suggestion that's already been suggested in the thread.

I don't have a problem with people using the search feature to find conversations on similar issues, that's a good thing over starting a new thread on the same topic that's been covered in depth previously. Lets see if @tcBob can get on that zombie rising emoji.

Haha.... the thread may be dead, but the truck isn't!

    DSC04067s.jpg

50 pounds of sound deadening crap later, the cab is notably quieter, and the doors have a nice solid thud when you slam them.

Also I eventually managed to fix all the water leaks, including:
    - both "door condoms"
    - air intake at cowl
    - 3rd brake light
    - rear window drains
    - air vent behind back seat <-- this one was actually the main culprit!

    Cheers y'all

Edit.... for what it's worth, here's what the doors wound up looking like, after I also decided to upgrade the speakers the other year:

I replaced it with 6 mil plastic. I tacked a piece up with the butyl tape, then used a sharpie to trace the groove in the door body, then removed said plastic, cut to size and shape, and resealed with butyl tape, more like a butyl putty. It took me awhile to find the right product, but this is what I used.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0155KELRW?ie=UTF8&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9kZXRhaWwp13NParams

Note the narrowist I could find was 1/4” so I ended up slicing the strip down the middle with razor knife and got twice the length. Its like putty so it is ploable and seems to be similar or same product the factory uses. Make sure its warm when you apply though, does not stick well when cold.

Yah I know, but this thread sucked ass and did not address the real problem. I merely added to it, how to actually replace the door condom, how to do it, what materials to use, much better than the original thread. Your welcome.

…and I do not think this is the water in the floor pan issue for most Tacos, by the way, it’s usually something else, like the cowl, or the third brake light. I posted this so people would know about the butyl, which no threads on this site have ever called out in detail, what I posted is what the techs use, per my bro in Reno, a toyota tech. I have to give him a little credit for turning me on to the butyl putty, and the indention in the door frame, which shows you exactly where the putty should go, and how to cut the plastic, at least 1/2” beyond your trace line, and the fact that it must be applied in warm conditions. Thanks Zeke!

All good points, and to be clear, I didn't mean to criticize you for joining TW and contributing useful information in your very first post. That is super awesome, and I regret that my attempt at humor might have come off the wrong way.

In my case, I fought many battlefronts in the war against rainwater incursion, but I think the decisive victory was the rear cab vent... located behind the middle rear seatback on my 05 access cab. That battle was won with urethane sealant, but no doubt a high-quality butyl tape is the correct product to seal the plastic door liners.

You can either buy plastic sheeting and butyl tape separately, which has the advantage of being less expensive, particularly in terms of total material acquired. Or, you can buy the liner pre-cut with butyl adhesive from Toyota, which costs more, but comes with the advantage that this is the exact amount of material you need, so you will not wind up with any leftover materials.

I am a hoarder so this is why I bought the Toyota part, otherwise I would keep this leftover butyl tape and plastic sheeting in my garage until I died, along with likely several other partial rolls of butyl tape and plastic sheeting acquired prior to and following this particular repair. The pre-cut part also saves you a little bit of time, which gives you more time to look around in your garage for some critical component you are certain you bought in the 1990s, even though you sometimes can't remember the names of your coworkers.

Edit: I incorporated the suggestion to use butyl tape in the first post as well, to benefit future readers of the thread.

However, for future readers, consider buying your butyl tape from McMaster Carr instead of Amazon. That way you will be sure you are getting a high quality product. Not to suggest that the Amazon product linked above was of inferior quality at the time it was purchased. Just that purchasing this same item from Amazon at any point in the future may yield a product of vastly lower quality.

I wonder if there’s something better that can be done to get rid of that messy plastic

no other car I’ve ever seen has that

    IMG_1805.jpg IMG_1804.jpg IMG_1806.jpg

Butyl is often called dummy cord
you put a piece on a socket so it doesn’t drop the screw you’re installing. It’s messy.
Toyota really said gimme a roll of that to slap on a shower curtain…

As someone who just got their truck around the last thread revival, this thread is awesome and I appreciate all of the info here. Currently dreading pulling off the barrier and trying to get it back on or replacing it just to replace my window motor (or the whole assembly... havent decided yet)
