I’ve been terrified of bears my whole life, but it all crystallized when I was at the house of a friend of our family’s with my dad. These folks had lived in Talkeetna (sp?), and the guy had this

book on the shelf. I asked him if I could look at it and he said sure, so over the next hour I basically doom-read the better part of the whole book.

The clincher was a story of this bear that was an absolute unit and had developed a reputation as a man-killer because it had become apparent that he was hunting humans specifically. My recollection is that because of a couple missing hiker/fisherman reports from the same area, they finally tracked this massive boar bear down and killed it. When they did the necropsy, they found the remains of at least two different humans in its belly and the fucking thing had been shot over a dozen times over the course of years and had obviously survived. One of the bullets was resting on its brain and they speculated that along with developing a taste for humans, it was essentially insane. I recall when they measured it it was something ridiculous, like 12 feet tall, 5-6 inch claws, and paws like fucking dinner plates.

Does anyone know how oil could end up on the transfer case ?

also, how fubar are my rack and oil pan?

 

I mean, there's oil in the t-case so you might have have a leaky seal or drain/fill plug. A lot of that just looks like grime and such built up over the years. Clean it up best you can then keep an eye on where the leaks are coming from. Make sure your drain and fill plugs are tight, replace the crush washers on them next time you remove 'em.

 

Oil pump gasket?
Really bad valve cover leak?
Oil pan seal?

 

I was wondering if the fan could blow engine oil all the way back there, maybe from the oil pump seal or something like that. But yea I should clean it up anyway. At least it's preventing rust maybe.

 

Or wind as you drive

 

The valve covers were done recently, but it's always possible they weren't seated correctly in the install. I haven't noticed any smoke from dripping on the exhaust though. I thought of the oil pump seal too, but it's hard to tell just by looking at it.

 

bro the fan is not blowing engine oil back onto your t-case lol. That's gotta be gear oil from the case itself.

 

or from the transmission if that's leaking

 

Degrease and clean, then look for wet spots before taking 1,000 guesses.

Remember some of it requires user intervention to really find the cause of an issue rather than sit on the PC and spit out assumptions.

Hm yea I thought it smelled like engine oil, not super sulfury like gear oil, but it does seem really far to be slinging it back from the engine. Resealing the transfer case doesn't seem like a one bannana job at all either.

 

Don't they make some dye you can put in the oil to make it easier to see leaks?

 

@Speedytech7 I'm actually impressed and would recommend that Bauer sander/grinder.

3/4hp and although it won't be close to the Grizzly, it doesn't even hint at bogging when pushing steel to the belt.

 

It won't do much good with an already dirty bay

I use a combination of purple power and simple green and spray that stuff on to break up the heavy stuff

Then run a brush with the nozzle in hand and constantly spray down grime

 

yes you can add UV dye to it. You can even buy it on Amazon. But most likely you'll just end up with a glowing mist everywhere under the truck

 

I am of the mindset that little weeping/seeping leaks on 20+ year old trucks are not worth worrying about, if it starts leaking to where it's a considerable risk you have to keep topping off regularly or leaving little pools under the truck that's different

if your engine was leaking bad enough to put oil that far back you'd have other parts in-between covered in engine oil. I'd be looking at the rear main in that case
