I've noticed recently that my position on the map is either way off (by thousands of feet) for miles at a time or randomly jumps from the correct location to somewhere completely different while driving. I don't ever use the map for navigation, and I usually keep the screen off while I'm driving. I actually study, do research, and work in the GIS, geography, and remote sensing fields, yet I have no idea what might be causing this. I believe Toyota offers software updates to fix/update geographic features and topological inconsistencies. Just wondering if anyone else has the same issue.

I don’t have the Toyota nav system, but the behavior you describe sounds normal for a gps device that is not assisted by cell site and Wi-Fi locationing.

Also GPS is highly affected by natural and urban valleys. I was in Manhattan, NYC a couple weeks ago and my iPhone gps was struggling.

FYI, I worked a mobile app a few years back that relied on GIS tech including a gps equipped phones, a spatial database, google map api, etc. The idea was to crowd source a wireless coverage map for AT&T, Verizon, etc. I found it fascinating.

I have built in Nav in my Entune. About 2 times when my truck was a year old it said I was driving about 10 miles from where I was. I was going to take it in while still under warranty but never did. Only happened twice and it has been fine ever since.
