Hello beautiful community, remember before I mentioned it here about the sipping oil leak that I got ? Well today I went to the Toyota dealer service and they found out , I need a new valve cover gasket. Everything out of the door will be about $330. Is that fair price ? Thanks my Tacoma doesn’t have that bad oil leak, it’s actually invisible but you can see it from engine parts thanks.

Now that you know what it is, you should take it to a local mechanic and ask them what it would cost. Then you have a comparison which will probably save you some money.

$330 is cheap to have the dealer warranty. Is saving $100 worth not having the dealer warranty

Seems like a fair price from dealer considering parts and time.
    I did mine on my 2.7 4 banger wasn’t a horrible job.

    ^^^
    Plus warranty as mentioned above.

Just do it before the dealer realizes that they meant $660 instead of $330.

Usually 1yr/10k miles, may be longer depending on state law. Ask the service writer.

longer than it should have but I did a lot of cleaning while I was at it.
Brought the valve cover and some other stuff in and used the wife dish scrubber she was pissed. I made the scrubber disappear.

probably could have done it in say 3 hrs or so.

Fair price for me? No. I get $50 gaskets and slap them on. So it costs $50.
One of the easiest jobs on a vehicle.
Installed cam gears while I was in there.
Given Toyotas are basic things usually come apart in minutes.

only thing I regret is not doing something like paint the valve covers red wrinkle. It would look better that way. Otherwise the engine bay is pretty boring looking and all silver. Would’ve been a good time to do it.

you can also get Smurf jizz. It’s blue liquid sealant used on German cars that never dries out, and creates a barrier.
This is better to use than RTV in corners. As RTV dries solid.
A tube that lasts a while is $20-30. It can be used on different vehicles, and different repairs. Whatever place you find probably will not have this.

$330 is a fair price for a dealership. IF it’s for both sides.
It’s a GREAT price if one of the cover bolts break off in the head.

Is this for ONE cylinder head. Or Both?

Great price, but price from a dealership may turn into more if they encounter other issues while disassembling. Actually seems like they are honest though.

    Yeah. I agree.
That is why I asked if it was for one head or both?
    Seems cheap for a dealership.

Agreed, considering some of the prices we've seen for the 3rd gen. Could be $1900, to $6000.00 for routine work. Oh and 10k to 15k for a complete new motor :annoyed:

Has to be passenger side only. Taking the intake off would easily make it 800-1,000$ at a dealer

IMO the question isn't "is this a fair price?"

The question that matters is "is this actually where the oil leak is coming from?". Is there oil leaking at the back corner of the cyl head? Is it dripping on exhaust and smelling? Can the customer see it? Is it an obvious leak?
