Replacing Cam Followers-2GR-FKS

Can the cam followers be replaced on this engine without removing the timing chain? If it depends on which ones, it's the middle cylinder exhaust valves.

Why would you need to replace cam followers on a 22 though? Shouldn't it still be under warranty?

 

I have no idea what a cam follower is, the guide? The gear/controller?

We've had valve seals out with no timing cover off, its a bear to get the cams out.

 

The part that sits between each camshaft lobe and the valve.

 

I'm assuming this part, also called a rocker arm although on overhead cam engines it's more commonly called a cam follower.

 

Oooooooh, yes they can be snuck out, but IIRC the cam has to be unbolted, its not hard on the exhaust side.

I've called them rocker arms since I've started, I actually got my 2nd bay from a guy getting fired over a loose rocker arm.

Cam follower does seem like a better term.

 

I called it that because thats one of the two names Toyota phrase it as (see image). I think a more common word for it is lifter, but in an OHC engine it's really just keeping the rocker seated on the valve stem and camshaft, not actually lifting the valve like in a pushrod engine.

The reason I'm asking is because I have one or two exhaust valves on the same cylinder that make excessive "lifter noise". It seems to vary through a drive cycle but its always there, and its worsening with mileage.

Iv'e dealt with Toyota on this and their first look they said it's normal. On their second look the tech agreed that there was "lifter noise", but they refused to repair it. After escalating it, I was told they would fix it if I wanted, but for various reasons I don't want or trust them to do the job without causing other problems (and the rep agreed). They said they would warranty it if it failed down the road because it's common for them to do this. Even though you can hear it with AC blasting windows up driving, and that the other 23 valves are whisper quiet.

So with that said I may swap them out if I can do it without having to deal with the timing cover/ timing chain. I could conceive of a possibility where I can remove the cam journal caps and sneak out the rocker.I just don't know for certain. Being the middle cylinder gives me a glimmer of hope. If were were the front cylinder I'd have less confidence, but I don't know not having been in one of these engines.

Between the vibration issues, some minor things, and the lifter noise it makes me upset on every drive it and a very regrettable experience that I have to live with for a long time, or loose my shirt to get out of. I work dam hard for my money, and I feel like I get screwed on this vehicle. I paid $55K for this truck, they are in denial of the conditional issues which amount to poor QC, poor materials, and assembly problems, and there's no good solution to dealing with it.

no, US. Truck, plus fees, and financing is over 55. I'm counting it because I'm paying it.

 

That sucks, that’s a lot of fees and finance fees to make it $55k.

Regardless of that though I’d let the dealer handle the repair if they offered to do it. You have a new truck under warranty, once you crack open the engine and screw around with the valve train you can pretty much kiss the 60k mile coverage of your engine goodbye.

 

I would prefer they do it, but the guy said they need to remove the timing cover, and based on the quality of workmanship at that dealer I'm 100% confident I'll regret it. All I want to know is if it can be done without releasing the chain.

I may end up letting it go as they suggest, or perhaps another dealer, but I have to believe that I'm not the first person to attempt this, and that there none here with this experience.

 

Whats the verdict

 

Make sure that if the repair is done to have the rocker arm(s) carefully inspected for bearing play and/or scored bearing surface..I'm sure the Tech will check em out carefully just make sure that they do




Sidenote on Rocker Arms that recently happened at my shop..one of my Techs failed to correctly set Time on a Mustang 5.0 which resulted in a catastrophic failure of the Valve Train and Cylinder Head. This was his second attempt to set time on the same repair.

Ouch, that got expensive quick.

 

Especially since it's going to be a Short Block because Long Blocks are on a 6-8 month back order.

 

I haven't had to do many timing chain jobs (quite a few timing belts though) but I always triple check everything and turn it over by hand to make sure nothing hits cause I'm always nervous about getting it right.

No new information. Based on what I can determine it seems it can be done, but I'm still not 100%. Regardless I'm loosing desire to deal with it. I'm toggling back and fourth between this and my vibration issue, and my tolerance of the BS is diminishing the more time I spend investigating. I'm about to stuff the truck up Toyota's a**.

I'm really disappointed and very much pissed off. I like most of you I work hard and often torn the money I pay for the things I buy and I expect a certain sense of value.

 

I know it's not always feasible but have you went to another dealer

 

I drove to one, and there wasn’t even room in their lot for another vehicle. They were so slammed with repairs that they already had 4 people waiting in line ahead of me and another ten or so in the waiting area. That was enough for me to walk out.

I also called a service manager today at another to talk about it and sample their willingness to help. Pending call back.
