Winter windshield cover

I have a 2021 Tacoma crew cab trd off road. Would like to know what is the best fitting windshield cover for this truck for winter weather? Thanks

 

As in to keep snow off the windshield in general or for storage purposes?

I would not recommend using them for general winter use. They're good for dry and fluffy snow. If it's even close to freezing or you get wet snow or ice, they're not good.

 

There are lots on the market if you do a search. I just use an old single bed size sheet. Attach by closing doors on the ends. Price is right and no need to worry about it. Folds up really easy.

 

I work at the airport and pilots will leave their vehicles parked for varying lengths of time. The new guys always try these things initially when they are first stationed up here, but they all quickly realize it’s much easier to just spend the 3 minutes it takes to brush and scrape while you let the vehicle warm up.
Not worth the hassle.
Even if they work correctly and you pull the cover to expose a clean windshield, you still have to brush off the hood and let the car warm up before you go anywhere, and should brush off the roof.

 

I use the old sheet because it works and is easy to use. A thick coating of ice on the windshield takes a long time of considerable effort to scrape off. My old arms don't like it. Brushing snow off hood is easy though.

 

I've always wondered what you are supposed to do with those when you take them off given that they have ice and snow stuck to them.

 

I just take mine off, shake off surface ice or snow then throw it on the floor behind front seats. Or hang it in garage. No room for Taco in garage. It eventually dries off for next use. I only put it on if I know heavy snow or ice is likely.

 

I’ve actually never seen one in use unless your storing your vehicle for a long time.

 

Ya I park outside. I usually use the remote start twice and then scrape the rest off, but I think a good cover would help a lot.

 

Things in contact with the windshield freeze to the windshield. If you do not raise wipers into the air to prevent contact-freeing, at least a barrier between the rubber and the glass of some kind.

 

It's just a piece of cloth (I use an old sheet) some are fancy store bought or online purchase that just covers the windshield. Only used for a few hours overnight use.
No they do not freeze to the windshield unless you put it on soaking wet to a wet windshield. Common sense. I know, used it for years. Raising wipers if anything can be a problem if they slam down on their own and can crack/break a sub zero windshield.

 

I had some neighbors from Michigan who used to put towels on their windshield and hold them in place with the wipers.

They moved next-door to me in Monument, Colorado.

The first winter storm we had their towels were nowhere to be found, lost to the winds of the Colorado winter gods.

 

Need full windshield to be covered.
Store bought ones usually attach to mirrors with elasticized straps.
I just close ends of sheet inside vehicle with doors.
Not complicated just common sense.
Maybe you have to grow up in a place that gets cold/very cold for up to 7 months to get it.

My dad was a pilot for delta, he was stationed here in MN, but lived in FL. So as a result he left a car in the airport lot all year. I would swing by the airport every week and clear his car off, start it and drive around the lot for about 30 minutes.
But he tried all the things, and also found it much easier to just clear the windows while it was running. He had me start it to keep the battery charged as the "jump cart" they had there was impossible to use when the cars are surrounded by snow.

 

We all get it. It’s very apparent from your many comments that you love your wet sheet, but it isn’t common sense. It’s an unconventional practice (that many times takes more effort than brushing) which you‘ve decided you prefer.
I’m already out there doing the hood and roof so instead of walking around opening and closing doors, awkwardly pulling the accumulated snow off with the cover, shaking off a moldy sheet and folding it up, I just brush my windshield too.
Definitely keep doing what works for you and sharing your amazing lifehack with people, but no need to get condescending.
Brushing is the best method for snow removal, covers are nice to avoid scraping a specific type of stubborn frost from ice fog.
