2024 Tacoma

I didn't spend a lot of time looking to see if this has already been posted but Toyota has put the 2024 Tacoma specs up.

Read the press release...when 3rd gen was released Toyota touted the rear drum brakes as being better option to all four disc brakes...that was 2016. Every manufacture uses four disc brakes on just about all vehicles. Toyota used all disc brakes until the 2016 Tacoma...seven years later... "Tacoma also now gets four-wheel disc brakes for increased braking performance compared to the previous model"...what changed?

 

But the Toyota engineer god mike sears or whatever that goobers name was swore up and down on his mom that drum brakes were superior and that’s why they used them

 

Gotta hand it to Mike Sweers: 8 years and three Tacos later, true to his word, I have never gotten dirt on my rear shoes while off roading.

Seriously though, if they offered a carburetor on Gen4, you can bet the marketing types would be selling it to us as “much improved”, and tons of Tacoma loyalists would be passionately arguing in it’s favor…so as always, grain of salt.

What I am curious about is how the commercial market will respond to the 4th gen. The other day in my neighborhood I could not help but notice there was a pest control truck, a roofer and some other tradesmen which escapes at the moment. The thing that caught my eye was they were all Tacos. OK, I know that this was a coincidence obviously they use all brands of pick-ups but still Tacos are extremely popular with tradesmen because these truck have a reputation for lasting forever. Is the commercial market going to just except Toyota's reputation and go with the 4th gen ?????

 

Drum brakes are pretty good...if you like drum brakes

 

3rd Gen is the last Tacoma designed for off road. Drum brakes and a V6 is minimum needed to battle mother nature on her turf.

 

They're not terrible. They do last a long time though

 

Drum brakes must be pro since they come on a pro model. Only the finest on pro tacomas.

 

I really like drum brakes...my 09 still has the original shoes @160k...last time i checked they still looked OK

When I lived on civilized-only flatland instead of off-roading (well ... gravel and "primitive" counts for off-roading) my 2007 Corolla (front disc, rear drum) got 100K from disks and 160K from drums. Not the worst options for me historically, but I am withholding judgement for my Tacoma that goes on un-flat and less-than-civilized AZ roads.

My 2017 still has the original drum brakes at 210k... nothing wrong with drum brakes

 

My 2000 S10 ZR2 has disc brakes all around. Rear disc brakes on a truck is a no brainer, you don't have to try to figure what exactly went wrong with the rear brakes every 40 or so thousand miles. You just take every part off and throw it away because the entire stupid system ground to a halt. Then replace everything.

I sold my 2013 ferd focus manual @ 183k on original rear drums and it's still going. I am glad my Taco has rear drums because I'll probably never have to replace them!
