Chris280e, have you found the solution to the leak. I have the same problem. Smoke test shows smoke coming from the attached plastic tubing to gas filler neck. Please let me know you status. Thanks and God Bless.

Hello sir! Yes it turns out that is a vent for the charcoal canister. I’m assuming it’s normal to occasionally smell gas fumes from this area. If you have a strong smell coming from there frequently it might mean the charcoal canister is bad. It seems the charcoal canister has two or three valves attached to it. In my case one was stuck closed. I got it unstuck and that solved the problem for a few weeks but the smell came back. I’m assuming the valve got stuck again. I have the factory service manual that’s how I was able to find the problem. I think the only solution is to buy a new canister.

Chris280e, I did not smell gas but after a smoke test, smoke comes from the same tube you show on the picture. My 2011 tacoma is sluggish when accelerating on the highway. and I had code:456 (evap small leak). thanks and God Bless Did you replace OEM part.

Not sure if a small evap leak would cause your truck to be sluggish. Did you smoke test the intake? No I haven’t replaced the charcoal canister yet. I’m actually planning to switch out the engine and install a VW TDI engine in its place.

Hey @Chris280e just to verify, you did not end up sealing that plastic collar, as it is supposed to be an open vent? I’m chasing down a severe evap issue on a Land Cruiser 100, they share the same filler neck design, and came across this post.
My issue is actually forcing large amounts of raw fuel out of that collar through that line, a new charcoal canister did not alleviate, and smoke testing through that hose from the canister produced a ton of smoke escaping past the top and bottom of that same collar.

That collar is supposed to be open, that’s the charcoal canisters vent to atmosphere.

If you have fuel coming out of that vent that means it is being forced through your charcoal canister (which is only supposed to have vapor not fuel in it) which means your gas tank is getting pressurized. The charcoal canister is only supposed to vent fumes when the engine isn’t running.

a couple things to check would be the VSV that is supposed to switch to vent to the engine intake when the engine is running. I have heard that part of the issue is the fuel return getting heated up which increases the temperature of fuel in the tank, that’s another thing to check. Lots of threads related to this issue on ih8mud.

Thanks for the clarification @Toyoland66 yes I’ve been through that huge thread on the issue, the main takeaway was definitely heat related. VSV seems to work, the vehicle actually stalls while driving due to Vsv sucking fuel into manifold during operation but wanted to keep my question to the collar, really the entire evap system floods with raw fuel.

Question, during manual techstream evap test, everything actuates, engine sound changes, but there is no real changes to pressure, and sits roughly at 775mmhg, opening gas cap drops it down to atmospheric so I believe pressure sensor works. Would this indicate anything to you? I’ve blown lines out, I’d like to find a root cause before spending another few hundred on a CC just to have it flood again

yea that’s supposed to be like that. At first I freaked out when I saw the fumes pouring out from behind the collar. Is there anyway to access the factory repair manual for that truck? I have them for my truck and that’s the only way I was able to figure it out.

@YhormTheClient There’s this app called just answer. I use it all the time. You could post your question there and mechanics will help you figure it out. There’s a lot of experienced guys on there.

@Chris280e Yeah there is a resource online with the manual I have been using for the testing procedures. And I had the same reaction lol, billowing smoke pouring from that collar and I was almost happy because I thought I had found the issue. I’ve been trying to leech off of previous just answers pertaining to Toyota evap issues, crazy how this seems to be an issue across many early 2000’s Toyota models but was never common enough to warrant action from corporate.

Up date, my 2011 was stalling when accelerating, it was diagnose with a poor Mass Flow Sensor, I had replace two OEM and the second one worked. But a smoke test again shows smoke coming from the side of the filler neck. Truck is running smoothly and with power. But I still have traction and engine lights on. any advise..

Additional Note: I replace OEM canister and filler neck.
