Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum. I've had my Tacoma since May 2020 but this is my first question on here.

I can't seem to find any guides or overviews on swapping out the rear axle seals. I took my Taco to the dealer for the 60k maintenance and they said the right rear axle seal was leaking. They wanted $411 to fix it but that seemed a bit excessive so I said I'd do it.

I just wanted to research it first to make sure I don't need any special tools or anything. I found a lot of info on the 1st and 2nd gens but no videos or anything for the 3rd gen. Does anyone have any info or a link? Is it the same as the earlier generations?

    Thanks!

$411 to replace a rear axle seems like a good deal.

I’m guessing that $411 is just for the seal itself. I’d be willing to bet a new axle at OEM pricing isn’t less than that. Nonetheless not a terrible price if you don’t want to mess with it

The seal is simply hammered into axle housing end. It seals to the pressed-on collar that holds the wheel bearing onto the axle shaft. It’s not much work to replace the seal, but if a groove is worn into the pressed collar (causing the leak) then that’s a lot more work.

all you have to do to change the seal is remove the axle shaft (have to undo the brakes, parking brake cable, and hydraulic brake line), then pull the seal and hammer in a new seal.

If you problem is that lube has infiltrated the wheel bearing, then that’s a lot larger problem to fix. The bearings are a sealed assembly and gear oil should not get into them.

Here is the TSB I had done on my 2016 (see post #1931 on the thread below). It may not apply to your 2019 but it never hurts to ask.

Thanks for the info! Hopefully it’s just a bad seal, I’ll take it apart this weekend and see how it goes.
