@Rock Lobster, I don't know you, but I've always genuinely appreciated your take on a post here. Carry on.

So, this "discussion" has gone on for 5 pages and is nearing 100 posts. After all this alarm-sounding and complaining, there has not been one post that actually has a practical plan to make it stop. Even the Mozilla article that the OP refers to offers no solution to what they say is a massive problem:

"You’re already helping us to spread the word just by reading our research. Our hope is that increasing awareness will encourage others to hold car companies accountable for their terrible privacy practices too. But that’s not all. On behalf of the Mozilla community, we’re asking car companies to stop their huge data collection programs that only benefit them. Join us! Add your name to ask car companies to respect drivers’ privacy and to stop collecting, sharing and selling our very personal information."

Ask the car companies to stop. Sign a petition. Yup, that will do it.

A guy here in Vt on the run recently stole a pedal bike, car, kayak, boat, John Deere riding mower and dump truck to evade police. Took a week for pd to get him!

Companies like apple and google have a decent track records when it comes to PII. Companies like Comcast, Verizon, T-Mobile, random apps installed on your phone, etc, not so much. I tried to apply for 10% off account at Lowes yesterday and they asked for my social security number. In what universe would I trust a hardware store with my SSN? I agree it's not the end of the world but I don't like that Toyota or any other the others are doing it. BTW, I'm on my 3rd social security number now. I go pretty far out of my way to not have this happen.

I called and opted out of all Toyota connected services at time of purchase.

    I’ve removed DCM power fuse.

I’ve submitted privacy request to Toyota to delete all my information that they have.

It’s what I can do as a consumer. Every little bit helps. Monetizing my data wasn’t part of any deal I made with Toyota.

BTW, I pulled OnStar module on my Chevy Diesel at time of purchase.
I don’t engage location on my cell.
I don’t use Google search engine or other Google products.
Collectively, consumers have power. Individually, not so much.
And if you participate in monitoring by choice, know that dis-information is an effective way to dilute the power of data tracking. Using various real/non-real names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, birthdates etc. when possible while engaging with normal retail and online transactions pollutes the value, accuracy and/or viability of their profiling.

Beyond all that, I just roll along.

Play nicely on tacomaworld, there’s no downside to basic courtesy.

I keep the '77 Beetle running, leave the cell at home if I can to go to the brothel, or soccer games on Friday night.

What, I just gave it all away, didn't I?

I changed the polarity on the DC power to my head unit, and boom!, suddenly I am monitoring Toyota rather than them monitoring me. It’s a loophole. My head-unit now drills right down into the Toyota mainframe.

The shit I have on Mike Sweers is crazy. The 2025 diesel 4Runner is gonna be lit. Also……I already know the TRD Pro colours all the way up to 2028. They’ve got shades of blue you would have never imagined.

Society is well aware but the majority doesn't give a shit, it's conditioning.
To kids of today, this is normal and when they grow up and have kids, those kids will see tomorrows world as normal etc etc..
Change is consistent, you either roll with it or give yourself a heart attack worrying about things you can't control. This life isn't forever, try to enjoy what time you have.

Just this afternoon I was thinking about starting a dashcam assholes thread on here. I've got four examples out of the past four commutes on my memory card at the moment. The amount of aggressive driving has gotten bad.

Then again, I really can't tell you the last time I've seen a police car working the traffic stops. Like I really can't tell you. No wonder it's bad. If you want to push people out of their lane and pass on the shoulder, there's no one to tell you that you can't. I mean, you might get shot, but at least you won't get a ticket.

Red light gunners are out in force around here- I follow the 2-second suggestion about when to go after the light turns green. A video post of the fun would be great- I’ll contribute as well.
