Quick point... don't use I'm an engineer as a qualifier. Too many engineers here and believe it or not, some are smarter than others lol.

IMG_4023.jpg No I don’t CrossFit… lol I probably need to though.. I started out using amsoil in this engine and have had very good luck with their products. Just giving the guy my experience with something different. I’ve also had great luck with Pennzoil and Valvoline oils. Just what kind of engineer are you btw there @hiPSI ? Cock fan huh?

As long as it's GL5, not GL4 only, should work well.

The Amsoil is better oil, and cheaper as well. I've run both for over 30 years, and the Amsoil always seems to work better. Just IMO.

It's been a long time since I built a motor. I have never, ever had an engine to fail because of the brand of oil.
Remember, Toyota builds a motor a minute, just to fulfill the Tacoma demand. Pretty sure they have their process and specs dialed in.

Facts and relevant analogies don't work when you're dealing with a troll. Then there is the fact it isn't Friday yet; why don't we let this (initially well intended) thread die a natural death.

Well I’ve had more than one go up in smoke but I was also running it 7800 rpm’s every weekend for half a year or so. You’re correct avout Toyota they build a phenomenal truck and engine/ transmission and that’s why I own an 2010 and 2013 Tundra and a 2017 Tacoma. Never had much of an issue or any issue from the drivetrain out of any Toyota truck I’ve driven

What I've seen is that synthetic gear oil comes in the 75w-85 weight, while the equivalent dino oil is 75w-90. So it just depends on which one you use.

Having over changed my diff oil in the past (comes out looking brand new, that always sucks), I ended up going back to dino oil on my Tacoma (my use wasn't breaking it down anyway). In my experience, the first two changes have been pretty dirty, then it settles down after that. Even when dirty, the oil still seemed fine, just full of metal particles (I assume).

IMO, the best thing to do when changing diff oil is to take a short drive around the neighborhood to get all the particles suspended in the oil, so more of the crap comes out when you drain it.

The diff is probably the simplest and most durable part of the truck that gets oil, and I'm sure anything sold as gear oil will be just fine.

I'm an engineer (mechanical at that, so we actually learn tribology), but I don't do anything with oil professionally. I just know it's supposed to be viscous, slippery, and have good adhesion. If it still does these things inside the diff, I'm happy.

the main advantage to synthetic is going to be less friction and better MPGs. ECGS says conventional helps dissipate heat from the gears better though. tried 85w140 during break-in like they recommend, and you could feel the drag from the rear end. too heavy, IMO, even in 100-degree weather. probably good for low-speed off-roading though.

I’ve used Redline 75W-85 in my ‘18 TRD-OR, the ‘21 Tundra, and just 2 weeks ago in the front diff of my ‘22 TRD-OR. Never had an issue. It smells like grandma’s root cellar, just like the others.

If anyplace in the world could offer a man like this, it would be SoCal in a Jeep or Tacoma. I don't even think you can get two out of the four here in SC.

If it's GL5 rated, they are all basically equivalent to one another, with synthetic having the edge over conventional in some applications. But I think you'd have to be towing a yacht running the Baja 1000 with a bilge full of water, to really need the high-test synthetic fill. YMMV :proposetoast:
