Yeah but from a legal standpoint, it's not good at all for the employer even if you volunteer said time.

Funny I had the same issue. It's just easier than adding payed hours and then deducting it in your FMLA. Such a pain in the ass.

my supervisor just told me he talked to HR and got them to approve it, just need approval from his boss (CFO). I guess they're gonna make it work, but yeah I figured it would make things pretty complicated with the FMLA and state reimbursement.

yeah this will be the most I've done, 1 month. Last time I only did 3 weeks. But as far as taking leave for childbirth goes it's not very long, I know a few others here have done 3 - 6 months...I think 6 months is the max in CA that you're protected for

but yeah if taking 6 months off I really don't think I'd come back lol

edit - I'm wrong, quick google verification says 3 months per year for FMLA

Gotcha. Ya I think they let my coworker use his sick + vacation for paternity leave and he was gone about 2 months total.
I've got about 140 hours to use but I sort of prefer to just use them here and there. Max I've taken off at once was a week in the last 5 years.

yeah if I were the one having the baby I'd definitely max it out, recovery from that is no joke especially if there are complications. Not to mention the needs of a newborn

On the plus side I get more vacation time per pay period now since I've been here a while - didn't even know that was a thing until it started happening haha

You mean 2 weeks paid? Surely you're allowed more than 2 weeks for childbirth lol. That would be nuts

I don't get any paid family leave outside of my normal PTO. But the state does partial reimbursement for family leave

Oh ok well that's definitely better, but they should extend that to include both parents imo.
