I mounted a camera in the tailgate handle. First I drilled out the factory rivet nut and widen the hole to fit a new 8m rivet nut. I used the new 8m rivet nut is used to both secure the tailgate handle and the camera. The stud on camera screws directly into the rivet nut. It works great and was easy. The angle is not perfect and I may try to adjust it a bit. If I ever decide I don't want the camera, it will be easy to undo. Just will need to buy a new handle.

 

After discussion and support from Kevins60, I installed my camera in a similar fashion. There is enough room under the handle to discretely mount one. I went a bit too much on the rotary tool, but still came out pretty good. I used a cheap aftermarket $10 shipped handle from Rockauto, and the standard $40 NATIKA IP69K from Amazon.

 

Wow, that is nice. What’s the view look like on the head unit?

 

I'm interested in the view as well. I've had mine mounted on my topper and the view is great, but I'd really like to get it onto the tailgate because sometimes I have the topper window up.

 

Anyone have a specific model that has worked well attached to the top of a shell and a writeup or more info on the install? I don't need it to be super precise for parking purposes but would be nice in certain situations when backing up on a trail. I don't have a stereo with a display so I'd want something on the rearview mirror and that's relatively DIY friendly for a wiring idiot like myself

It's super wide angle so I can see a lot.

 

Thanks looks pretty straightforward. Did you wire it into the tail light for power and then run the video cable up into the cab to connect to the mirror?

The silver near the bottom of the image is the tailgate. But it's wide enough to show both ends of the bumper. My radio head has adjustable track lines so I set them to the tire sidewalls. I'm very happy with this set-up. Less than 200$ with a used radio from Facebook marketplace.

 

Here was my solution. I don't have problem drilling holes you don't really notice it. I just wanted to get the right angle to see the most, and my hitch ball... I did it at the same time I was repairing and repainting my tailgate

How were you able to mount this into the existing bracket? Everything is can get my hands on jas to be mounted directly to the mirror. I can't do that because my windshield is tinted and I don't want to cut a portion out of the tint.
The link you posted shows that ot mounts to the windshield and not the overhead mount.
Can you give me some help please?

I can't speak for the mirror the other user posted, but I've been doing research into this too. It seems like a few manufacturers make adapters for our factory brackets, but you need to order them by phone. For example, a company called AUTO-VOX has this image on one of their products on Amazon:



It looks like the bracket in the lower left would fit our trucks, but everything else in the ad implies you need to call them to order it. A few other manufacturers look as though they might have mounts for us as well.

Another option is to get a mirror that just mounts onto your existing mirror with straps. I have this one, and it works pretty well besides the fact that you have to fiddle with it every time you lower the sunshades.

Can ypu buy just the mount from Auto-Vox?
Can't seem to find it anywhere.

 

Not as far as I know. I looked as well. My guess would be you have to call them.

 

Hopefully nzbrock will have some info on it.
I did email the company, see what happens.

 

I used a piece of mirror mount from a Lexus RX300 I got at a junkyard. I drilled holes in it to mount it to the existing mirror mount holes. I took the new mirror with me to the yard and found a ball the matched the socket on it.

 

I had to create a jig to align it correctly on a drill press. So not the simplest thing to do. It is way simpler to just stick it on the windshield.

 

@willz503 Do you happen to have any pics of what the Pop Lock handle looked like before you installed the camera? After you drilled out the hole.
Size drill bit you used.
Which gasket did you use to get the best angle?
Looks like 3 come in the kit.
