As mentioned in the Georgia thread, I'm planning to run the Traverse next month. This trip is open to anyone interested.

According to the GT website (https://www.georgiaoverland.com/map.html), there is a section of FS road near the beginning of the trail that is closed. To avoid that, I am planning on starting the Traverse in Dillard, and ending in Crandall. That should give us two leisurely days to wander through the hills of North Georgia.

I plan to leave camp by 9:00 AM, and make camp around 4:00 PM each day. That will give us plenty of time to cook, eat, clean up, and sit around and BS.

You will need to be 100% self-sufficient - food, water, etc. I'm going to carry 5 gallons of gas, even though I doubt I will need it. Obviously, you can turn off the trail and head to town if needed.

I would like to meet up around 3:00 PM on Friday, and drive a short distance to camp. I need to determine a specific meeting place, and figure out Friday night's camp site.

In the meantime, post up if you are interested.

    Any suggestions also appreciated.

    The Plan:
Meet in the parking lot of Ingles, 176 Hwy 441, Clayton, GA 30525, at 2:30 - 3:00, gassed up and ready to go. I would like to head for the trail as close to 3:00 as possible. This will either get us to camp early, or allow plenty of time to find a place to camp.

On the way to the meeting place, I am planning on having lunch at Pueblos Mexican Cuisine, 2595 Freedom Parkway, Cumming, GA 30041 (GA 400 at Hwy 306, next to the Kroger shopping center) around 11:30, if anyone is interested in joining.

    Comms:

In...but I'm a newbie. You think this is a good first-ish outing? I've watched a bunch of video and it doesn't look to bad at all.

It's hard to determine on the map how big of a space the camp site along the way are.
For instance this is a Campsite and it's near water 34.956246,-83.499228

I've never run it, so I can't say for sure.

There will be several trucks, I have a winch and recovery gear (and the knowledge how to use it), so if you're game, I'm good. You bought your truck to go off-road, right? I'm sure you will learn a lot - just ask questions.

CBs are not required, but can make traveling a little easier.

If you want to use a handheld radio, you will need an external antenna. The antenna on the radio does not work very well from within the cab (due to the frequency of CB radios).
