Setting the scene - two lane highway; speed limit 60mph; following a vehicle with approx. 2 sec interval; speed control engaged with lowest space setting engaged, highway widens to account for a left turning lane, leading vehicle identifies "turning left" into that lane, as vehicle enters turning lane it slows down for the left turn and my vehicle goes into "automatic emergency braking". My vehicle speed is rapidly reduced from 60 mph to 30 mph. If there would have been a vehicle behind me; I'm sure I would have been rear-ended. The car turning left was in the "left turning" lane when this happened and I had a clear lane in front of me.
Other than not using the speed control feature; is there some other feature with the auto braking system that will prevent this from happening?

Yes this happens in multiple vehicles. Very annoying. I have set my distance with the most spacing and it still happens.

You’re following the vehicle to close while using the radar on cruise control or the vehicle enters your radar to close and the truck thinks there’s going to be a collision.

if you hold down the cruise control button you can turn off the radar and use it like normal cruise control.

That’s what I do. I can’t stand the how it slows down my truck when someone in front of my isn’t going the speed limit and I want to pass.

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
That’s why I have all that crap turned off or to it’s least sensitive setting.

Has happened to me multiple times in multiple Toyotas and various situations.

I don't think you can turn off the TSS system, can you?

TSS can be turned off and adjusted but the pre-collision can’t be turned off.

That's what I was referring to since this is usually caused by that. Is there anything you can turn off aside from radar cruise, lane keep assist, etc?

    You can adjust sensitivity.

Only time my warning and auto braking turn on is at low speeds and I’m actually about to rear end someone. Got distracted by my kids and it almost happened.

Happens to me occasionally. I only use the radar cruise control whenever the roads are more open for this reason. If they get busy, I just drive normally.

One weird issue I've ran into is this corner near my house, if a car is headed towards me at the right spot, the pre-collision kicks in. This started after I had the windshield replaced, so I am guessing the 'calibration' safelite did wasn't good.

    Too close.
Rule of thumb is one second for every ten miles per hour. Should have had a 6 sec spacing (at 60 mph).

I remember being taught this in driver's Ed. Then I began driving on the freeway and realized that someone else will just slide into that space if you leave it open. You just have to drive defensively and pay attention.

Yep, that is the way it is taught. Works too.

    He wasn't on the interstate.

I didn't say OP was, I just meant in general. 7 seconds at 70 MPH is over 2 football fields (721 feet). 6 seconds at 60 MPH is nearly 2 football fields (528 feet).

Far more practical at slower speeds though.

Yep. And then you're supposed to increase that distance in poor conditions (rain, snow, fog, sleet, etc.) Obviously don't drive fast at all in icing conditions.

Generally, yes. I'm just saying, good luck if you absolutely live by that rule at higher speeds. It's a good rule of thumb for learning to drive until you become more comfortable with your vehicle's abilities, your own reaction times, etc. No matter your good intentions, someone else will be around to throw a wrench into that. One football field is over 10 car lengths. People aren't going to allow you to keep that much gap (let alone larger) on any interstate unless no one else is around. You just have to keep your head up is all. Around here most people are lucky to have 2 car lengths before initiating a pass.

Some of y'all insist on using cruise under conditions that shouldn't in any way involve cruise.

    - if you are on a road with perpendicular intersections, maybe you shouldn't turn on cruise.

When I see a vehicle slowing for a turn I just turn off the cruise and once they’ve turned, re-engage.

I have had this happen in my three tacoma's 2021-2223 one 2022 4runner three 2022 silverado's 1 challenger (the challenger only warn's you). I was not following to closely actually not following at all there is a left turn lane ten minutes from my house on a highway. If there is a vehicle in the lane waiting to turn seventy five percent of the time this will happen. So needless to say when I a coming up to this turn lane I turn off cruise control drive through manually and the turn on the cruise control again.
FYI I drive a commercial vehicle for 28 years I deliver fuel so camera reviews all the time and signals sent for following to closely.

I think that cruise thing happened once to me in my first 300 miles. I turned off the cruise and said "Well I guess Ill have to read the manual" Ive realized recently that I constantly drive like I am driving a Semi with trailer. I keep that distance when some jackass goes between me and the truck I have plenty of time to slow down. Ive gotten REALLY used to it. I also went on a road trip with a friend of mine who owns a Ford Transit van. He drives like a lot of people describe in this thread. 1-2 car lengths away and aggressively constantly passing. all for 5 more mph. I 100% refuse to drive like that. Do the math.. you arent saving a significant amount time. Even when you are driving 14 hours.

I'd be very surprised if you can't turn off the pre collision system; check the manual and all of the menu options on the dash display.

In every Lexus and Toyota I've driven with these features, they are fairly straightforward to turn off. (The 4R is very easy to turn off, I'd assume the Taco is pretty similar).

Oh, and to answer the question: this has happened with the auto braking in an Acura, but none of my Toyotas have braked at an inappropriate time. I've only had the 4R beep at me once (no braking), and I was driving pretty aggressively at that time.

The bottom line is, they're imperfect systems thrown in as a selling point. They're going to make mistakes.
