When is Toyota going to show some more Xtra Cabs? The only one I have seen is the same Prerunner. Not being a hybrid these should be some of the 1st trucks built.

Exactly. But that’s what $12k was when that was produced. Nostalgia blinds us to the fact that driving old shit daily kinda sucks.Modern vehicles are so much better for the same inflation-adjusted price

 

$12,000 was $12,000 back then same as $12,000 is $12,000 today. The dollar is not backed by Toyota pick up trucks.

Truth, love my 1996 but even it kinda sucks on the road compared to a modern pickup. I couldn't imagine one of those rickety old 4 cylinder Hilux's going down the highway.

$12,500 today is the same as $4,200 back then ('83).

 

There are no $12,000 trucks today. Say a RWD utility pkg is $28,360 today, that would be equivalent $9,255.48 40years ago. You couldn't buy a RWD ext cab Toyota pick up for $9,255.48 in 1983. They did not exist. Which i irrelevant.

Using inflation in the comparison of what a truck cost yesterday, to today, and what it will cost tomorrow has no bearing on why the truck costs more in 2023 than it did in 1983.

Sure the purchasing power of the dollar is down, but inflation is only a fraction of why things cost more today than they did yesterday.

 

Trucks cost more in 2023 than in 1983 because of inflation. For the same inflation-adjusted dollar value, you’re getting a vastly more capable, comfortable, reliable, and safe vehicle.

As shown above, that $12,588 price-is-right truck would be $40k today just due to inflation. Inflation is exactly why trucks cost more today than they did yesterday. Wtf are you even talking about that inflation isn’t why they’re more expensive?

There's much more that goes into the price of the truck than the inflated dollar amount being the sole driver in cost.

Take the same truck same features 2016 Tacoma compared to a 2023 Tacoma. Adjust for inflation and see what the difference in MSRP is.

 

Inflation is not the reason for the increase in price. If it it did the MSRP would match the inflated calculation. The market adjustment could be added to make up the difference.

 

I agree inflation isn't the only thing that affects price. New flat panel TVs are way cheaper now than they were ten years ago. But whatever is influencing current Toyota vehicle costs, the data shows a new Tacoma is less expensive than six years ago.

 

You’re right. Features are actually cheaper over time when adjusted for inflation. So we should be cheering that an SR 4x4 gives us so much for $30k instead of wishing we could have an old nostalgiaporn POS for more money when adjusted for inflation

No they cost more when looking at the numbers. Iflation by definition is a theory, and those theories vary.

 

Dealer mark ups for no real reason have had more impact the past year or two....
