Hey all. I try not to make new threads but I couldn’t find any existing ones that I could post this under.

Looking for advice/opinions…My General Grabber ATXs have approximately 35K miles on them. Recently I noticed what looks almost like dry rot around the edges of the tread blocks. It’s pretty widespread and on all 4 tires.

Is this a problem or not a problem?

When I push the lug with my fingers, I can see the void (circled in red) get a little bigger so it seems like the tread blocks are almost separating from the carcass of the tire. What does everyone think?

I'd replace them, but I'm sure others will say they still have life in them.

    Thanks for the input.

Also, for reference all 4 tires are at about 10/32nds of tread left. They are E rated and this size starts at 16/32nds when new.

I purchased them new about 2 years ago. I believe this is the date code, right?

That's not the date code. It will be a four number code, first two numbers are the week from 1 to 52 of the year, last two are the year as 21 for 2021. first week would be 0121 date code. And it's only on one side of the tires.

Only a couple of years old. Have been exposed to a lot of sun light? Still under warranty? Are the sidewalls showing signs of cracking or just the tread? I would be more concerned it the sidewalls are showing the same cracking.

They are exposed to sunlight constantly because I don’t have a garage, so the truck is parked outside. The Grabbers allegedly have a 55,000 mile warranty but I got them from simple tire and their customer service has been horrible in my past experience. I won’t be buying from them again in case anyone is wondering.

As far as the sidewalls, I don’t see any issues at the moment.

File a warranty with the manufacturer and send pics.

I would be concerned too. I would replace the tires as long as warranty is good. If cracks in the threads, I'd replace them ASAP before any one of them explode.

I had a tire exploded when I was younger, the sidewalls were intact, stayed on the wheel and the middle part is gone....

Ugh, yeah that’s what I’m trying to avoid. I have a big trip coming up so I’m concerned about whether or not I need to replace these tires before then.

Any other opinions are welcome! Replace them or they’re still okay?

You say you have a big trip coming up... How badly will your trip be derailed if you have a tire blowout? Several tires? I'd get your email sent out today inquiring about warranty to see if they can get them replaced before your trip for free before you shell out for a new set and they won't pay you back.

I carry a full size spare so losing one tire would be a minor inconvenience, but if two went down I would wind up having a tow truck take me to a tire shop and have to buy 4 new ones. That would be a big problem because I’m traveling with the wife and 2 dogs.

I appreciate your input, it seems like the consensus is that it’s a moderate to major problem. I’ll see what General (continental) says. Problem is that I don’t really want another set of these, but if they’re free I’ll take them.

If the reviews on General’s website are any indication, it sounds like their customer service people will probably tell me to pound sand.

My trip starts 2 weeks from today so I may have to bite the bullet and pay out of pocket for new rubber.

I very much appreciate everyone’s input.
