I actually ordered my truck with the tacoma factory cover. It to does a fine job keeping everything dry. Only beef, it's heavy to remove for one person, but not impossible. Best part, it's strong enough to hold a 60 lb bag of concrete on top of it. So far after more than 3 years, the cover still appears like new.

I gotta say my cover at over 3 years looks far better. Did your dealer supply you with a tonneau protectant, and tell you how to care for it?

Mines about 4 years old and peeled in the same spots but not as bad.
I sanded the spots and painted black. The rest of it is a bit faded but not horrible.
Pretty good shape actually considering my kids climb on top of it.

I keep my truck out in the weather here 24/7. You gotta use some sort of tonneau cover protectant every few months to keep the ultra violet rays from the sun causing damage to the cover. Dealer made that clear to me after they did the ceramic coat to the rest of the truck. They even supplied me a bottle of wolfsteins protectant to get started with.

Hey @pop.tremuloides...I'm looking to switch from the OEM to a DiamondBack HD cover as well, if for no other reason than to be able to haul things on top the tonneau cover. If you don't mind me asking, what did you get for your OEM? Trying to figure out a price has been a pain...don't want to go too high or too low, but would like to try to get something to put toward the DiamondBack cover. Any regrets with the DiamondBack HD or things you'd do differently?

Our Extang Solid Fold 2.0 shifted a bit initially. Took it off the other day to put a new exhaust in the bed. When I put it back on I had a buddy sit on the front corners while I tighten it down. Doesn't budge a spec now. My only gripe is that it only folds up 2x and you have to remove it to have access to the entire bed.

Had a BakFlip on our 2nd Gen Tundra and really liked it. Super solid, well made, sits flush with the bed and it would fold all the way up against the rear window. Might sell the Extang and get a BakFlip one of these days. Otherwise the Extang does a pretty good job... for me anyway. ;)

Reviving a thread...unable to post in classifieds because I'm pretty new on here but I have to get it out of the garage. Just bought a short bed '23 and I don't want the tonneau (prefer Bakflip) so I removed it and the rails and latches. I live in KC. Comes with all necessary parts...rails, latches, etc. Please PM if interested.

You should be able to sell it on FBMP or Craigslist pretty easily.

I loved the BakFlip on our Tundra. However after some recommendations here, if/when I replace the Extang on ours, I think I'm going to go with Leer's HF650m tonneau cover. It looks very similar to the BakFlip, flush fit and all, plus I think I'd really like the release mechanism more. Instead of pulling down on a wire the Leer has a "squeeze" release that seems like it would much more comfortable to use (better security-wise too). It also folds all the way up so you have full access to the bed like the BakFlip but it doesn't rest against the cab when it's all the way open and it doesn't require you to drill holes in the bed for drain tubes. Price is similar. Nothing wrong with the BakFlip, but Leer has a few advantages IMHO. So I'd take a look at the Leer as well when the time comes. Your call of course.

I was all set to get the Revolver X4s until I found out you had to relocate the Tacoma accessory rails. Ugh. I think this utilizes the accessory rail so no relocation necessary.

Thanks for the link. This wasn't even on my radar.

I have a new Pro that a family member bought but doesn't have the tonneau cover. I was able to score a new cover and hardware but so rails with the cutouts. So looks like I will be selling a set of rails with no cutouts if anyone needs a set. Just waiting on the truck to get released so he can pick it up.

    Happy to help!

Here's a video that shows the Leer HF650M being installed on a 3rd Gen Tacoma:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSDpGd-h6Ao

So you're correct, you don't have to do anything with the OE rails since Leer's rails are installed above them.

I stumbled across this handy little video where the guy has a couple of useful installation tips for Tacomas including how to continue to use the OE tie downs.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC_CpsFWzNg

o_O Leer should give me a discount now. If anyone gets a friends and family deal, coupon or kickback of some sort, lemme know!

LOL, since your original comment I'd already watched those and some non-Tacoma Leer videos as well. I think this is the one. I really didn't want a tri-fold but this can be uninstalled with zero sign it was ever there. Why BAK decided to install their own rail when there was one already there is weirdly moronic.

Thanks again. Time to dig around for best prices now!

Ill second that.. got 400 miles on my truck and been through 3 torrential rains. Not a drop in the bed of the truck. Trifold OEM cover is awesome. I even washed my truck twice with the powerwasher and did spray the cover and the edges. Guess what. no water. Yup..

Of course I dont think the truck shifts bad either. Went and put 100 easy miles on it trying to get to 500 miles before next friday when I tow my Tiny camper. This truck is a DELIGHT. 5th 4x4.. FIRST toyota. I think I am going to get my wife a rav4 next. Perfect little car when she doesnt need the minivan. We are a toyota family now. My mechanic for the past 18 years approves 100%

I have the OEM cover and think it’s fine. I bought the truck new and had to do some tweaking to get the cover mounted correctly. It was apparent people at port or the dealership didn’t install it correctly. But a couple hours adjusting the shims that the cover has gave me a nice, tight fit that is generally pretty watertight. If you have to use the whole bed a lot, it’s not a good cover because the section closest to the cab is fixed in place. Removing it is easy but the entire cover is bulky and not easily moved by one person. There are better aftermarket options but my truck came with the cover and it works for me and how I use my truck.

I got a bak 4x (not the 4xs) brand new in box thru Craigslist for my long bed for 500 I think I got a decent deal. Not crazy about the rails but at that price I had to compromise
