It's a good balance of everything. We didn't want anything we can sleep inside of, that's just not our style. I sold the tent it came with and I'm going to put a 72" 23Zero on it with an annex. Some of the other options are just too expensive new for what is essentially a glorified Tupperware box on wheels. If you're not already, start looking on the trailer section of Expedition Portal. I bought this from a member on OverlandBound, but EP has a lot of listings. Have seen a few more of this model too, especially out west.

After spending the week in a wedge tent last week, I won’t have anything but a 62” or larger 23Zero on whatever trailer I get. I currently have a 56” weekender on the truck and it has at least 4x the space of the IO wedge.

I’m not on EP, but now may be the time to start an account and nose around. I’m a sucker for a deal, and definitely don’t have to buy new.

Yeah I'm not active on there either, but their classifieds are second to none. If you just monitor the trailer section you'll get a feel for what's out there and what the market is. I'm pretty impulsive but you'll know what's right when you see it.

I’ve been drooling over the Sasquatch campers for a year or two. I worked on a project right next to their shop in Silverton, Co and they are good dudes with an awesome product. But damn they are $$$$$. If I had the spare cash I would do it in a heartbeat. I want to move into the trailer camping as well.

Yup, built my own for it to go on. My biggest issue is my wife and I like to weekend camp and when we weekend camp we tend to stay in one spot and explore from there. Couldn't do that with the tent on the truck. As much as it made setup/tear down easy on the truck the packing up before moving was annoying. If you just do overnighters then tent on truck is much better. This was my covid project to keep me out of my wife's hair as well. I have a bunch of photos of the build in my truck build thread as well. Also happy to answer questions.

Does anyone know if any other manufacturers make an XL tent without the entry extension/fly besides 23Zero and CVT?

Extension/fly kinda dumb imo. I want to see outside. Circled is what I’m talking about.

trailer works well in that you park it and then can drive you vehicle around without
    having to put everything away.
this was a jeep trip so the tacoma stayed home. Built this jeep tub and a

Thanks for all the trailer recs everyone. The research continues!

Anyone have any real cons worth mentioning with trailer tent camping?

I now get about 11, maybe 12 MPG with my trailer. But for comparison my fat pig only gets about 14-15 with out it. It isn't my daily so its mostly just the fun-mobile at this point.

It makes you think ahead about the logistics of any place you go. For example this summer we went to Acadia NP. We left the trailer in the campground, but if it was a situation where we had to have it with us, it would have been very difficult if not impossible for us to park some places and see what we wanted to see.

    Yeah.
Mainly just the hassle of getting it where you want to go and gas mileage. If you are going somewhere to disconnect it and set up a base, and explore from there for a few days, it's great (as long as getting there isn't too hairy, but a fully articulating hitch can help with that). Storage while not using it can be a challenge for some. If you are moving camp every day, I still think an RTT on the vehicle is a better option.

Disclaimer: I have not had a camp trailer but have taken trips with someone who used one for a couple of years. He pulled his over Stony Pass in CO, which was impressive to watch. He got sick of the hassle and has gone back to an RTT, but we typically move spots every day.

What everyone else has said, tight rough trails are now increasingly difficult, I decided early when I moved from my truck top to a trailer that I would find camping with easy trails to set up base camp then take the truck alone on harder trails and come back to base camp when done. the MPG thing sucks with the tacoma already not being great. I think I get 15-16mpg average when not towing and 12-14 towing depending on wind direction.

Also keep in mind that towing with the Tacoma means keeping it out of overdrive on ANY incline. luckily where I live Indiana is flat as fuck so my cruising speeds, in combo with the weight of the trailer, and drag seems okay in 5th (know I am going to catch some flack for this but dont care) and dropping down to 4th when going up any form of incline to help those MPGs. this is why I made my tent on lift struts to bring the profile down as low as possible behind the truck.

Also bringing a trailer means you can bring more stuff which in some cases is a bad thing but some cases a good thing.

gas mileage could be an issue depending on how big or heavy a trailer you end up with.
mine empty are only about 600 lbs. So doesn't really effect gas mileage. A RTT on top
hurts mileage worse. From what I have seen some people like a RTT on top to look cool.
And what do you bring, a sleeping bag and granola or everything and the kitchen sink.
Do you have to haul wood or fire pit to keep it off the ground.
On a difficult trail with a trailer you have to plan ahead, or leave it at camp. BUT a RTT on
a truck or jeep on a difficult trail can result in a rollover due to being top heavy. If you have
tall tires you have already raised the center of gravity, and a RTT makes it worse.
So you have to decide or look back at what you have done in the past.
    Good Luck

Amen. This was wheeling with my hardshell RTT when I had it. Group of 10 trucks, me being the only one with a RTT. I had to choose between this or rolling over. Everyone else was able to stay clear of the boulder, but not me. I heavily reconsidered my setup following this and I'm happy to have no RTT on the truck anymore.

I'm sure it's been discussed.. but it's almost October, I'll bring it up again.

How is everyone storing their RTT's in the winter?

I have the gloss ikamper and would like to store it in the garage over the winter as the truck is parked outside and I can't imagine the cold is good on the hardshell. I've thought about a winch system to the ceiling or even just standing it up on its side.

I’ve built a small cart for the tent to sit in its side in my garage. It wasn’t meant for this to begin with but repurposed it. It’s on wheels for easy movement around the garbage if need be.

I bought an electric atv winch from harbor freight and built a pulley system to hoist my whole rack off my truck. 4 bolts and about 5 min and the truck is free. The RTT and rack hang in my garage when not in use.
