Just in time to run across this post...
My truck has 42K on it now, and I plan on changing the diff/TC oils myself at 50K. Easy enough. (I don't even want to know what the dealer charges because I don't want to have a stroke..)
Anyway, I've been doing a lot... Maybe too much... Research on gear oils myself.
Anyway, Toyota calls for 75w-85 GL5. Not a really 'common' weight it seems. At least not common enough that the local parts store has cases of it.
75w-90 GL5 seems to be a lot more common, and it seems a lot of others here run this oil with zero probs at all.
From what I've gathered... And this might just be Information Overload, but it seems that the 75w-85 is more for light-duty and maybe better MPG's.. (Which would be me) And the 75w-90 would be for heavy duty... Like towing/off road/etc. (Not me)
I'm looking at the 75w-85 Redline also. Pretty pricey. Would cost about $125 for both diff's. On the other hand, I'm seeing (Example) Valvoline 75w-90 'Full synthetic' at being half the price. I could live with 75w-90 as it seems almost everyone does. I know that GL-5 is synthetic, but I couldn't find out if the Valvoline was GL-5 compliant. Maybe yes, maybe no, I have no idea. Maybe someone here does?
I'm kinda' a big stickler on using exactly what the factory says, so there's that... But this is still all up-in-the-air at this moment.
Looking forward to what others are going to say about this.

It should call out GL-5 (and a bunch of other stuff) on the bottle / bag.

    * if it meets it. Just check for that before you buy

Very much overthinking it. Not that that’s a bad thing, but it really does not matter what you choose. Neither 85 or 90 are “heavy duty.” Heavy duty is 110 or 140. I have run everything from 75W-85 to 85W-140 and never felt a difference in the drive or measured a difference in mpg. I don’t recall a noise difference on my Tacoma but I run 85W-140 with my aftermarket gears. On the stock gears I don’t recall if there was a noise difference but I don’t think there was. You really don’t need to specifically seek out Toyota or redline fluids for the 85, but you certainly can if you want.

I used the Redline 75w85 for my Tacoma front and rear diffs after talking with one of their (Redline's) engineers. The guy was very helpful and knew his stuff. I did mine at about 35k miles. Used the Toyota 75W (in a can..) for the transfer case. yeah I'm an engineer too....

Brand quality absolutely differs. In the service our trucks see does it matter enough? Whether it matters to the owner or not is an individual opinion.

15 dollars Costco jeans work just fine. But they are not the same as better brands. Does it matter if they both cover your ass? Up to you as it matters to some and not others.

For those who may not know, like me, please explain how brand matters for a particular type of oil. Comparing oil to Costco jeans isn't exactly proving your point. Does Lucas oil have a higher thread count?

Okay, I'll feed you cuck trolls a little.:crapstorm:

It's certainly not comparing jeans to oil, you'd have to be an idiot to think that.:homer:

It's comparing cheaper products using inferior ingredients to more costly ones using higher quality components.

Then making the point that it may or may not matter in these trucks since they are very mechanically sound. So it boils down to the individual if they want to pay for what they think is a better product.
