These will be eventual topics that will benefit his build, should he start pushing the limits. Worthy additions.

There is an AWD BorgWarner transfer case which can handle good power as well. Not sure about with the added load of 39's, but still worth looking into. However, probably better for high speed runs, than crawling.

It was what I had planned on putting behind my T56 Magnum.

The t-case I'm going with will be an atlas 4 with 3.8 gearing. Should work pretty well for high speed and crawling! 9" rear end. built 4l80e. The only real weak point is the front diff. I'm not too worried about crawling just cuz I'm not into mashing the throttle and bouncing my way up stuff, so I think it should be fine. But hitting whoops and stuff shock loading it might not work so well.

No sweat at all, all good info. I need to regear my truck and part of me just wants to wait to throw a bigger axle in the rear before i do that.

I’ve been at the very last Reno air races ever this past week, so haven’t been on the phone much. Otherwise I would’ve been chiming in haha.

exactly. I’ve done my build in the most fucked up way possible. Did 40 or so projects all the same time and prayed to God everything would still work at the end, and 99% of it has so. But this is super good info.

Finally back in town after about a 2 week vacation. Went up north west of cinders to go camping, came home and flew to Reno for the air races. Super fun experience, got to be behind the scenes with one of the racers from the unlimited class. Super sad ending on Sunday, but it was certainly a really cool experience.

my work schedule has changed allowing me a lot more time to focus on school and aviation, as well as a tad more time working on the truck. Going to try and have the engine out by end of this week, I have a whole pile of parts ready to slap on. Should look Neato.

Sucks that the air races are leaving but it was only a matter of time before another plane ended up in the grandstands. Fortunately that didn't happen the last two years when planes went down.

Yeah it was pretty tragic. We were standing in the pits when it went down. RIP Nick Macy and Chris Rushing. Those guys loved what they did.

Everything is disconnected from the engine, harness, fuel lines, power steering lines, vacuum lines:IMG_6291.jpg

All that’s left is the exhaust, engine mounts, transmission bell housing bolts, and torque converter bolts and I should be able to lift the engine straight up and out.

When I was draining the oil, I found this: IMG_6288.jpgidk if this is from other shit in my drain pan or not, but when I captured some of the oil in my Dr Pepper cup, I couldn’t sss anything close to that amount of metal. It’s incredibly fine, and I’m not even sure that it is metal. This oil has maybe 200 miles on it too. LS’s make oil super murky super fast. In either case, I guess it’s good I’m pulling the engine. This is kind of convincing me to have someone who does this every day to look over the engine. If it indeed does need some work, I’ll probably put some higher compression pistons in it, over bore them, and go for about 500WHP, ~600 crank Hp NA on this motor. That’s where I’d like to be ideally. I don’t even know what to do lol. But the good news is I have everything needed to reseal this engine top to bottom. Should have the engine out this weekend. Tomorrow is the wife’s birthday so I won’t be working on it tomorrow.

Gave him a call today to discuss options, his labor seems pretty fair. We discussed stroker options, and some other stuff. Really I just want to make sure that the engine is okay, and if some stuff needs replaced so be it. I’m gonna have the motor out this week and will potentially drop off the engine next week with Van.

    Radiator mounts are done!

everything is bolt in, nothing permanent in the truck which is really nice.

Everything is finish welded. Going to hit it with a few coats of steel it and call it good.

Only thing left is to finish welding up the new flanges on the radiator and final assembly.

How much did he want for that engine? I wonder if he still has it.

Tonight’s progress. Going to call van tomorrow again.

Pulled a rod bearing and a main bearing, they don’t look great but they don’t look bad.

im glad I was able to pull the motor while leaving the transmission in its place. Makes life just a little bit easier.

How many miles where on the motor? And how many on that oil? My ls had about 90k on it and I change the oil about every other outing(only get it out a few times a year) but my oil always looks damn near new every time I change it so shocked it’s that dark

Nope, didn’t touch the steering shaft, have plenty of clearance there.

gonna call him in a little bit. What was the turnaround time for you?

Called van, he answered and said he’s busy at the moment and he’d call me back, but that was like 4 hours ago lol. Waiting on a call back. I’d like to drop the engine off tonight though and get it started.

yeah definitely a failure somewhere cause that’s not right… that sucks, especially with 50k on it.
