It can also depend on how circumstances can make "want to be a hero" into an "almost necessity". If on an open road with several police vehicles already chasing and you can just clear out ... best to clear out. If on a crowded street and you there is less than 1/2 lane width available with you facing that offender ... you could stop your vehicle and just bail to avoid the crossfire if it does not muddy the plans of the police because escape is all but impossible.

I am not applauding the person who interfered. It is still dangerous to get into official police situations where you do not know the plan the officers have working. And you risk personal property and injury/death if you intervene.

Overall is best to clear out and if the offender damages your vehicle let the fight be with insurance.

True, though it is possible (unless it's been confirmed or denied since) the person might have been LEO as well.

Guaranteed the guy wont be in Jail for long.... with our LOVELY states criminal policies...

100% In this case not a damn chance id put myself in harms way physically or financially like this dude did.

While I agree with you, Unfortunately here in CA especially the AMAZING place that is LA:puke:, the good Samaritan in the truck will likely only face legal action, out of pocket expenses and be dealing with the fall out from this for quite some time do the the B E A UTIFUL policies of the area.

That Taco driver is lucky this guy did not open fire on him. And had he discharged a weapon, then the cops would have responded in kind with a hail of bullets. Fuck the rest of LA county, I would have done everything I could to get as far away from situation as physically possible. Save yourselves people, nobody else is going to.

PS: and did you notice that the Taco driver finally wises up at the end and gets the fuck out of the line of fire!

Yeah, but we "waddled" off still looking at the offender and the police as if saying "yeah, fine, I will leave!".

Personally, I most likely wouldn't have joined the fight. The officers had it under control (or soon would have). Knowing my luck I would have been charged with something.

Probably the only time I would join the fight is:
-officer was down or in grave danger
-Mass shooting/imminent danger in my path.
    -Family/friends in harms way.

The situation is unknown to the guy. You could tell he just reacted and wasn't really ready for anything more than stopping forward movement.

A gun was tossed from the car, so he was armed. Something to think about. A good guy with a gun doesn't always win.

As stated a few posts up, he might actually face legal action. I shit you not. When I was living in CA a friend had a home invasion and the thief was torn up pretty bad by his dog (Doberman). Was it a little excessive? Not my call to make but the person shouldn't have been in my friends house either. He was sued.

On the flip side I lost two good friends one night in Denver due to a car thief running from the cops. The car was going ~100 mph at impact (they were stationary on motorcycles) and hopefully didn't suffer. They left behind a 4 year old boy.

    Things to think about....

He lost and was sued for 15k.

I really liked CA (state outdoors), but I'm leaving CO for the same reasons 26 years later.

Someone breaks into my home, my dog [rottie] will be the least of their problems....

Yea - CO used to be good but it has definitely taken a turn..
    Where ya heading now?

We are getting a lot of 'foreigners' in NC - from NJ, NY, FL, CA - they are messing the whole place up.
I used to go towards Raleigh when I went into the city, that is now fuct - and the closest local town has now been over/run and ruined by the same cohort..

I know the law where I live and once they breech that front door, it would be over.

Criminal acts happen a lot quicker than most realize. I got one for you all that happened this summer to my family.

My oldest has always wanted to see orcas. She was assuming this would be in a zoo. Screw it. They needed to see them up close and in the wild. I booked a trip to Washington and off we went.

Last day we spent with family and went to an outlet mall outside Seattle (pretty anti-Seattle). While there my two kids were in a Sephora and we were out in the mall general area. Well one of those "smash and grabs" everyone has been hearing about. In seconds, several people masked up, smashed all the perfume counter glass and was out the door in less than 30 seconds. The wife and I ran in to find our kids. They jumped behind the front counter and took shelter. We finally found them after some looking.

Wife and kids said "that happened so fast".....and I'm glad they seen it. The doors on my house have not been left open since.

Saddest is when people leave states that have screwed up laws because it is "unsafe". Laws set by people they chose. The move to states with better laws.

In their new state the choose the same kind of lawmakers. o_O

Not sure to be honest. TN has the best tax breaks for retirees. NC has the best benefits for federal service retirees (which I am not). Talking with Sixcreed the other day in the tractor thread, didn't know he left NC and moved to VA for cost savings.

I like water and so does my family. The ocean is a no go for most of my family since two of them get motion sickness. Found that out early on when on a dive with the wife. People just laugh and can't figure out how we got together.

So who knows. TN, ID, SD, and WY are on the short list. TX maybe....and that's a big maybe.

This is also big on the list for my next move. We have castle laws here as well, but you can still get in a civil suit rather quickly.

I had a home invasion attempt a few years ago at 1030 in the morning. My dog about ripped me out of bed and was going nuts. The first second I was like "I'm going to kick him in the asshole" since he cut my arm. After a couple seconds he was still going crazy at the front door it dawned on me...today was the day. I took several big breathes, grabbed the AR and went investigating. Yep. There was a really nice GMC Denali in my driveway...and two men at my front door using a bump key. My lower lock was easy, but the deadbolt was giving them a little trouble :D. The dog wasn't stopping them so I had to assume they had a plan for that (small caliber pistol). One of the intruders looked through my front kitchen window again and this time I stepped out of cover with my AR pointed at him. They casually left, backed down my 275' driveway (plates removed) and drove away like they were supposed to be there.

I gave my german shepherd a treat and some extra love. He didn't get in trouble for the arm either. He just needed me to get out of bed urgently.

The real risk of a civil suit would make me think more about less lethal options I suppose.
Rubber buckshot is still gonna do some damage..

It is crazy how emboldened criminals out there have gotten.. having the gall to sue [the victim of the crime you committed] is the most insane shit ever

NC Law specifically makes you immune from civil liability if you shoot someone breaking into your home:

    § 14-51.2
"A person who uses force as permitted by this section is justified in using such force and is immune from civil or criminal liability for the use of such force, unless the person against whom force was used is a law enforcement officer or bail bondsman who was lawfully acting in the performance of his or her official duties."

In addition, my curtilage [which is ample but clearly not adjacent to the roadway] is considered part of my home for self defense purposes:
Home. – A building or conveyance of any kind, to include its curtilage,

My photo studio is just a few blocks from Crenshaw. All this video does is remind you how stupid criminals are and just how fucking stupid local tv commentators are. These chases are the national past time here in L.A., seemingly even more popular than the Dodgers. Well they no doubt get more viewers. If I were in that gray Tacoma, there's no way I'd have done that. You never know what's going to happen, and it only takes the slightest bump to run up thousands at the body shop. I got caught up in one of those - and I don't know what to call it - where two or three assholes take over an intersection and start doing donuts around it with hundreds of mostly gang member shooting cell phone video to document it for social media. I was somehow able to turn around and head the other way but only because one car moved out of the lane next to me. You gotta keep your wits about you.

I kind of expected the Tacoma dude to exit the Tacoma and shoulder a truck gun on his ass. It was a big target. :D
