Lug nuts changed size or deformed???

I have the sport rims on my tacoma with what I thought 21mm lug nuts. I always change my own oil and do tire rotation every oil change, well when I go to rotate my tires the 21mm socket is not fitting. It only fits on 4 of them out of 24 lug nuts and the rest there not fitting. Whats up with that? I went to the parts store and bought a new 21mm impact socket thinking my previous socket got deformed with my impact gun? Anyone have any ideas whats going on? Oh on a side note the 22mm socket is to loose...Im freaking baffeled

Ours use a 21MM socket unless the previous owner replaced it with another aftermarket set. Does the lug nuts look stripped/rounded? I could see it getting rounded by over torque-ing by impact wrench. I would go with new lug nuts once you remove the old ones. You can find lug nut extractor kits at auto parts stores for around $15 that worked well for me in the past. It's a reverse-threaded socket that would loosen the lugnut while you tightened the socket. Good luck.

 

Lug nuts that came with our trucks are probably made out of plastic. They do deform and feel flimsy. If you can find ones that came with 1gen trucks replace them. luckily for me I kept mine from 1 gen truck.

 

I have seen alot of problems coming from toyota lugnuts. the chrome part on alot of them is just a cover and becomes deformed. its a real pain in the ass when you do as many rotates as I do. I normally just use a 22mm socket to get them off but that doesn't really fix the problem

 

^This. Many of the outer fake shells on mine had come off (which was good because the inner "real" lug nut is solid). For those that didn't come off and were deformed, sometimes I had to pound the socket onto them in order to remove them (and then it's fun to get them out of the socket). Solution if you're keeping the stock wheels is to order a set off of ebay as those are solid, one-piece units. Much higher quality than the stock lugs.

i would just use what socket fits the nuts now and remove them and see wtf is going on.....

 

yep mine does the same thing when i rotate. i talked to a tire place and they say that the plating that is over the actual lugnut swells causing the issue.

 

They are definitly metal lugs the ones that come from the factory, but I guess its the chrome plating thats the issue. Thats just weird I didnt have a problem with them 5,000 mi ago then all of a sudden 20 of them dont fit. Time for some new lugs. Anyone know of a good set of lugs that will last and not swell???

 

I replaced mine with a Gorilla lug and lock kit from Discount tire. It was about $40.

But they are flimsy. And yeah chrome comes off easily. You were just unlucky and some of the chrome finally gave out.
1 gen ones are not chromed but feel stronger, 4runner ones are chromed and chrome is much better quality then our truck so if you want chromed lug nuts look at junkyard, from 4runners.

 

Like I said, I got mine off ebay and they were solid and would last forever (I sold them when I replaced my stock wheels). Plus, if you have some of your stock lugs that are still good, post them for sale on the forum. Some people still want them because they'll have one or two that went bad and it'll be cheaper to buy your remaining lugs than it is to replace the whole set (and they fit in the postal service's flat rate box where weight doesn't matter so shipping them is a flat rate in the US).
