In all practicality the 2tr 4cylinders, +mods if ya want more, are the probably the best all around option for these trucks. If they weren't available in these we'd be seeing dozens of threads about swapping them in. Same exact bottom end as 3rz but with a vvt head. It's basically a bored/stroked late model 2jz with two cylinders chopped off. About the most reliability, best use of space, and most reasonable weight engine that you could get in this engine bay; and makes great torque which is what would be missing from any high revving swaps like k series engines. IMO once the aftermarket catches up on with them, most of us will be wishing we got the 2tr model originally

You can buy the leak detection pump separately but it’s not really any cheaper than buying the entire charcoal canister.

The evap system on this era Toyotas is a real pita imo. Replumbing evap was the most complicated part of swapping a OEM dual tank in my GX.

The charcoal can throws 5 codes when it fails I just went thru it myself. Evap pump is part of the charcoal can. Changed the whole unit and the problem went away.

I got a buddy that’s k swapping his ranger, but it all just depends on what you want out of the truck. For the desert v8 torque is king.

my gas gauge failed a couple months ago so i ran out of gas thinking i still had a 1/4 tank and it threw 10 codes / 5 per side that my cheaper reader will clear but they come back 2 days later i’m stumped so i was going to drop it off at the truck shop and let them figure it out

Did you fix the gas gauge problem and are still getting codes?? My gas gauge failed(would not go below 1/4 tank on the gauge) and I put in a new sending unit and all was well. Though mine didn’t throw any Codes.

Yeah that’s the group of codes I’m getting, so I’ll probably go that same route.

I agree, the torque of a v8 rules for sure. My dads tundra has the 5.7 3UR which apparently has forged internals right out the gate. Someday perhaps, when I move out of CA.

I have not fixed the gas gauge problem yet, multi day troubleshooting projects are a problem for me because i live in a townhome and my truck is too long so i can’t close the garage door. I was thinking about just buying a new sending unit and going for it. I can’t imagine that the sending unit would cause all of those codes though ? and i really don’t understand why the codes keep coming back after just running out of gas ?

they are all evap system codes :

p043e - leak detect low flow

p043f - leak detect high flow

p2401 - leak pump control circuit low

p2402 - leak pump control circuit high

p2419 - system switch valve control circuit

p043e - leak detect low flow evap system

p043f - leak detect high flow evap system

p2401 - evap system leak pump control

p2402 - evap system leak pump control

p2410 - evap system switch valve control

I had zero codes prior to running out of gas so it just seems crazy that parts would be toast ?

I had the same thing happen but with no codes - replaced the whole pump assembly since it’s a b**** to get to. It sounds like you didn’t replace the pump / float yet right? Could have a short or popped a fuse making those codes appear. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are all sharing some input parameter or relay etc.

It might have been a coincidence that you got those codes when the fuel level sending unit took a shit but all those codes point towards a charcoal canister/evap pump.

edit i'm just going to make my own post in 15 min

Hi guys. I'm offtopic, but, I figure you guys might know best. Excuse me and thank you. I have a 2wd 4runner, stock and am looking for the best sand tire for E California sand/silt/all so I have the least chance of getting stuck. Looking for recs for 285/70/17 or similar. I would consider off hiway tires if those exist.

I understand that traction in 2wd will always be tenuous I am examining my options starting with tires/wheels.

Was always super happy with my Goodyear duratracs. Had 7 sets over the years and they did great in every terrain. That said I switched to Milestar Patagonia’s a few years ago and they have been amazing. On my second set of those now.

Airing down will always have more value than the tire choice itself

picking a good 17” wheel is important but shouldn’t play a big roll in traction unless you pick some weird backspacing that changes the vehicle footprint… that might make some small marginal change…

I’d pick some AT tires or non aggressive MT tires with a good sidewall that helps with traction when aired down.
Usual culprits are gonna be your
    Wildpeak AT3W
    Grabber X3
    Or
    BFG KO 2/3

I am looking for maximum traction (in sand / loose over ). Do muds typically excel in sand . . . ? I was looking at the kuhmo road ventures.

I may be able to swap my rear wheels off hiway to a staggered setup. 285/70/17 is my limit on the front (no bmc) but maybe I can go bigger in the rear.

    Is hiway a tire?
Or do you mean highway like
    Road tires?

the knobby parts of the tire are what give traction
So if you imagine what a paddle tire does
    Vs a street tire
Your middle ground is AT and MT tires

the general grabber X3s are like a hybrid of AT and MT
Great on the road, low noise for me, and grips like a mofo on sand and snow/ice conditions

    but
After 50k miles they have minor chunking which I consider completely fair since my Silverado makes 700hp

    and
The grabber X3 is eligible for road hazard warranty at tire discounters (where I live)

I don’t want to assume your intelligence but, I’d heavily advise going on YouTube and looking for some videos on beach and dune vehicle recovery so you get an idea of what traction looks like,
Might even be able to compare a few tires visually if you can find videos you like
