Went from 17" rims to 18" and get 10% worse MPG

    I have not forgotten you, I love the look, but my MPG went from 320-330 (with the stock 17" TRD rims and nitto 265/65/17) down to 290-300 (with 18" rims and nitto 285/60/18) which was a big (bad) surprise

    You put a bigger and heavier wheel/tire combo on the truck and didn't expect to lose MPG's?

    dude you went to a bigger tire!! of course you will lose mpg and the rim is heavier just like mcgyver said lol

    seriously man. 285s are significantly wider than 265s. more friction and more weight.

    interesting, I hadnt really thought of that because its such a small increase, it wasnt enough to affect the speedometer, so Id figure it might be like a 3%-5% difference there

    is there some easy way to do that? I looked at the tire size/metric converter stuff before when comparing tires....but this looks like a few more steps and Im not math professor

    I entered in you wheel/tire specs and the revolutions per mile are off by about 3%. I think, emphasis on think, that indicates you are actually traveling 3% further than your trip odometer says. This combined with you heavier wheels and tires could account for you lost MPG.


    Someone please critique that for me.:D

    The weight issue cannot be overstated. Increased unsprung weight of larger wheels and tires has significant impact on the vehicle's overall efficiency. Uneconomical driving habits with heavier wheels/tires cause even more drastic impacts.

    I went from the stock 17" Sport wheels with 265/65/17s to 18x9s with 285/65/18 Load range E Nittos. They are significantly heavier. I only lost 1.5 MPG. I knew there would be a decrease and I can live with it. If you didn't correct your distance on your figures above, then you actually went about 309 instead of 300.

    mpg is part of the reason I went 285/60 instead of 285/65 (which was supposedly a lot heavier tire)
