POR-15 doesn't work well for things that scrap together. Basically what happens is when there is an abrasion through the coating, rust forms under the coating and then spreads underneath it. So then things just start flaking off in chunks eventually. I found this out the hard way using it on my sliders.

I never used the product but I have seen people use Steel it on stuff with good success. IIRC @malburg114 did his axles in it, I wonder how they are holding up.

    Interesting video on it:

I've never found POR-15 to work well on anything, the shit isn't even UV stable.

I think the only place I have seen it work "OK" on is my floor but who knows that shit could be flaking off under the vinyl by now.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I've never been too impressed with POR 15 either. It's always just come off in flakes for me. I was wondering if it was just me being lazy and not prepping well, but judging from your responses, that is probably not the case.

I just ended up doing a light coat of Rustoleum on the leafs. Once I wire wheeled the dirt and surface rust off of them, they were actually in pretty good shape.

So... I was going to give POR 15 another try on the axle housing, but after this conversation, that aint happening. What do you think for the axle housing? Steel It?

Here are the leafs after wire wheel.

Then after 1 light coat of Rustoleum

I've been massively impressed with this two part combo, like even trying to scrape it off so I could weld a new fixture on my frame was tough with a flap disc or a wire wheel.

x2 on this Steel IT is good stuff, I used it on my new axles and don't regret it. While it has gone up in price to $33/can, it does hold up very wheel in Northeast salt/rust.

WHat's that brass spacer thing on the end of your CV axle?

This is a much cheaper alternative to Steel-it. Same weldable properties and all

Question about rear driveshafts, I know they all are different lengths based on transmission and cab. But are they the same from the axle to carrier bearing. I'm trying to find a spare I can modify for a crawl box. My trucks a 03 Xtra cab 4wd 5 speed. Will one from a auto fit?

Yes. It's the length between the tcase and carrier bearing that changes.

I don't "Know" the answer. But I get what you're asking. I would presume the carrier bearing is in the same location on both trucks, only changing the length of the front half of the shaft. Seems the most logical/cheapest way they could account for differences.

    Edit:
If you have an auto I can measure mine(MT) and we can compare.

That's what I was hoping, trying to find a spare to modify but the only ones I can find local are from an auto and I just want to modify the front section and not have to make a new cross member just for the carrier.

[IMG] The truck is now a truck again. Shakedown run around the block everything feels solid, just waiting on the headlight and a drain plug for the front diff. Then I’ll take it to work and button it up

I did my axles and front frame section in steel it. It’s nice cause you can weld through it but it drys like a flat paint. I prefer a satin or semi gloss. Steel it also faded super bad when I started storing my crawler outside. At 20 bucks a can when I bought it, I didn’t mind using it. It covers super well and I sprayed it through a cheap hf spray gun too when I did the front frame and axles and it did real well. That said it holds the dirt and at 30 or 40 a can now, I won’t use it again. I’d like to try that seymour paint or whatever just came out that is similar.

nice stuff but fades and is super expensive. My 2 cents

Made preparations for heated leather seats and installed door sill protective film from Amazon.

I have the leather and the shop will be ready for me to bring the seats in (one at a time) in a couple of weeks.
